Well there are several threads on wiper arms, which I have read
through, but I can't find the answer to this question.

My 1972 FJ40 has the wipers above the windshield. In looking at
other FJs of that era, it seems that there are two types of wiper
arms: straight ones, so that the wiper blades park at angle to
the ground; and arms with a slight bend up at the end, such that
the wiper blades end up parallel to the ground. Which design
is OEM? Which works better? Are the arms sold by SOR and
others the straight kind or the curved kind?

The wiper arms are production month/year specific.

The 1968 to 09/72 wiper arms are a “two-piece” affair, like what you reference as having a slight bend up at the end.

The 09/72 to 12/74 wiper arms are a one-piece unit.

I prefer the later-style arm, as it is far easier to get a generic wiper blade assembly for it, compared to the earlier style, meaning, you are more likely to go into an auto parts store and find your 11” wiper for the later arm then the earlier one. :)

Both styles can be adjusted by removing the arm nut and arm from the pivot and put banc on so that they sit up higher on the windshield when at rest, but it will be a compromise as to how far they clean across the windshield.
