Same as me and never had problems driving without it. I still don't fully understand the purpose of that check valve. It seems its only purpose is to keep the tank pressurized to a certain point, but why, so as to not release HCs into the canister while parked/very low speed?

So, just FYI, I just finished testing my VSV as I described above by running a vacuum gauge into the cabin and it did show that my VSV was working. The VSV opened up to vacuum in fourth gear only. So, that just goes to show that the check valve was causing the pressurization.
 
Seems like I should at least run the purge line from the charcoal canister to the intake manifold so it's not vented to the atmosphere (and smell up the garage). Or would the charcoal canister basically absorb those?

keep the line to and from the charc can. run the purge line right into the air cleaner post filter if yours has that option.
