Did 98's come with an amplifier in the compartment next to the spare tire tools? It has a tie off strap and everything built in....I don't have a manual so I wondered if this is the norm.

I disconnected the amp.... the speakers / system seem to work fine...planning on using the amp in my fj40 : )))

Did anyone else get one of these with a 98? I disconnected it totally and can't tell any difference in the sound system. Could this be normal? Did I just get an amp thrown in on this LC purchase?

That's an aftermarket amp. The right rear cargo cavity is a common place to hide aftermarket amps. There are several install pictures of other people's setups in ih8mud forums. But I have not heard of the stock amp located in the left rear. The sub woofer (for both the stock version and the high-end sound option) is located in the left rear. Maybe it was an amp used specifically for the sub woofer.
The stock amp in my '00 TLC is under the front passenger seat. It ain't a pretty color and it don't say "XPlode" on the case. It's just basic silver metal case with the feeds and speaker cables. And I do NOT have any special separate amp for the sub that's in my left rear.
Your seller either forgot about or didn't care to deal with pulling it out. Maybe they upgraded the speakers too? Lucky dog.
If the system is working fine, check under the front passenger seat for the amp that goes to the regular speakers.
Then check if the sub is really working at all, now that you pulled out the Xplod amp.

What you posted makes sense. I didn't mention it, but there was a sub woofer speaker box attached to this amp. So you think it was just put in there and the seller left it to the next lucky owner that just happened to need some speakers and an amp for his FJ40? Man, I'm a very fortunate person. 2 LC's and an amp w/ speakers...does it get any better?
Yup, sounds like they had an additional amp for the sub.
Was the subwoofer box the long black, multispeaker deal hiding behind the mesh area of the left cargo cover? Or was it some type of custom deal?
There are a few pics of sub speaker units (stock and hi-end optional) in other threads. Try searching for words like " stopping rattles noises cargo area" in the 100 series forum.

I'm going to stick the amp and woofer box in my little red avatar wagon to your left. The speakers came in a nice custom box with 4 speakers...
