I bought an AISIN water pump from Cruiser Outfitters a few years back, and once I finally started my engine for the first time, I got a lot of clattering noise from the front. Rather worryingly, there is already slop in the water pump flange, and I think I got a dud (it was very cheap...).
I've not taken the pump off yet to 100% confirm it's bad, but I don't think there should be any noticeable slop in the flange - I have two old water pumps, well used, one Toyota and one GMB, neither of which had any detectable slop by hand.
So now I'm thinking, was I just unlucky, and should I got for another AISIN unit, or are they inferior to the genuine part? They are around half the price or less, and I have in the past wondered if they can really be the same thing. Externally, they are identical, with the AISIN pump just having 'TOYOTA' gound off. Could the AISIN unit have cheaper bearings?
I wonder if anyone has lookd into this further.
I opened up a new pair of AISIN free wheeling hubs and can vouch that they are of inferior internal design to the originals, but that might just be in the spirit of what 'improvement' means these days. I beleive the original Toyota-supplied hubs are NLA, so there is no direct comparison.
