I am looking for a clean 82-85 hilux to pruchase- any things I should look out for? It will be kept stock and mainly share DD duties with my 60. Any help would be appreciated.

one word- rust.

other than that just normal every day items, steering, saggy ass, interior, make sure 4wd works.

Personally go for 85 w/solid axle/ efi. Best one you could find! My 84 has everything the 85 does w/o Efi. Sucks, but what ever, Got a hell of deal and dont regret it...

85 is the best year.

fuel injection.
front axle is trussed.

the 82, and 83 have the worst lookin grill headlite combo i think I have ever seen. 84 and 85 have the real brute good lookin front end. and the 80 and 81 is the most bad ass lookin front end the ever put on a Toyota. ( In my most humble opinion )

Hey, my 84 axle is trussed!

they may have started that in 84. I dont know for sure. but the point is, in 85 they have a 22re AND the trussed axle.

biggest thing I can think of off the top of my head is frame rust.

Toyota did a great job making those frames, only problem is it makes spotting damage tough. I have seen frames that appeared to be in perfect condition on the outside broke in half. They are very well painted or coated. And since they are prone to start rusting on the inside 1st, you might not ever notice it until its broke.

The frames rust from the inside. I'd take a spring loaded punch and test various parts of the frame. If it won't go through it I'd say it's good enough to drive.

I've got some pics but the quality makes for bad depth perception.

I would say every place you can stick your finger in, check for the metal de-leaving but don't cause it will probably cut you and give you tetanus and you will wind up suing me.

On the surface in one spot the metal has eroded from the inside and the outside is smooth. To look at the pic it would look like corrosion so the pic does not do justice to what it really looks like.

Another thing to consider is which body style you want. I've had both the 79-83 and the 84-85. I found that if you are over 6' tall the 79-83's are hard to get comfortable in - just too small.

Not all '85s were EFI. Damn it. :) Mine wasn't.
