So I am seriously looking at a HJ45, but it does not have AC. It is the 2H engine, and everyone on the 45 board is telling me that it can fit AC from a 40, but nobody has really told me what I wanted to know. Also
How in-depth of a project will it be to add AC do a 2H engine on a 45? Is there a part source, or do I wait until someone is parting out?

Once I get all of the parts, should I, the average shade tree mechanic, be able to install it or should it be taken to my local AC shop?

Same for power steering.

The reason I am posting here is because I know you guys are familiar with the diesel engines. I don't want to base my purchase on someone telling me how easy it is on a Gasoline engine by mistake.

Thanks for all your help!

No different than a gas engine except that the A/C amplifier (computer) that is specific for a diesel (gas engines need a coil output which you don't get on a diesel) and compressor mount are different. You'll probably need hoses made up as well.

I did the same on my '82 BJ60. It has the A/C system from an Alaskan FJ60.

Your talking about the vintage air or nostalgic air set up they put in 40s?

Big thing is getting the extra accesory pulley. I would look for the compressor and bracket from a HJ60. The do the kit for the 40 series.

It has neat under dash vents that add on.

Cruiser guy how hard is it to swap in AC on a 60?

Here's a couple of pics so you can see.

It's easy to do the swap. Finding the parts is the hard part. I'd recommend you find the 3B compressor mount/tensioner pulley assembly first, the A/C crank pulley that replaces the spacer that's now between the power steering pulley and crank pulley, then the A/C amplifier and when you have all of those the other parts can come from an FJ60. You'll need custom hoses but that's no big deal as well as finding a manifold for the compressor that works at the wrecker (again not a big deal) because the compressor on the FJ is on the wrong side if I remember right.

cruiser guy, I have the crank pulley now. I made an onboard air set up using a york a/c unit. But "if" I found I don't use the air that much I might convert to an a/c set up.

It's darn hard to find those pulleys. I asked for awhile and begged. And thanks to Greg and Sheldon they grabbed one off an engine for me. But they are hard to find.

As it is where I live AC is not that important. It only gets warm for a few weeks a summer, but if I moved back south into a city I would most likely do the swap.
