I have had my AC system pressure checked today (nitrogen to 220 psi), with no apparent leaks and the system charged - yet still no cold air. I was told the problem must be in the expansion valve either plugged or defective, which of course is inside evaporator or cooling unit under the dashboard.

I just tore that apart and found the expansion valve seems to be leaking (wet with sealant they put in the system) and it looks like its partially plugged and the cooling fins on one side absolutely plugged with dirt, crap and corruption.

My question is was there any older 60's that came with AC in the hope I can get another expansion valve from Toyota If so what year, model ?? Would be nice to get this fixed for the Whipsaw dust.

Failing that option -where could I get these AC parts?

I bet they are the same as any 60 series truck. I'll check to see if they are available through my suppliers at work. If all else fails, can I have you A/C system?;p

some bj's came with a.c., i dont know if they were factory or dealer installed i have only ever seen 2.
lots of fj62's have factory a.c. why cant you use one from these units ?

The BJ's DID come with factory A/C, a VERY RARE option (all of them have the wiring at least partially there, my '82 did). I retrofitted mine to a factory A/C setup. If you have a decent A/C shop they should be able to make something work even if it's not OEM, it's not rocket science. I had a guy in Guatemala get the A/C going in the FJ55 and that required alot more than a simple expansion valve.

My '85 BJ60 came with factory air. I had to change the compressor to make it work. After that it worked OK. The AC in my HJ works much better, though. Like Charles said, any AC shop should be able to source the parts. The compressor for the BJ wasn't listed in any book, the shop opened up their book and found one that was an exact fit. Same for the round thing that sits next to the rad, the replacement they found was smaller in diameter, they just wrapped a layer of rubber around it and mounted it in the same bracket.

Looking good ....

Thanks that helps big time. I will try NAPA for an aftermarket expansion valve. Lordco is always my last resort.

The AC shop recommended clanging the "receiver" too, which is a disposable cartridge of desiccant in front of the rad in the BJ and behind the rad in the 60's equipped with AC (has a small round window in the top). The AC guy said this is common Toyota part used in cars as well (Supra) so there is good chance its available after market as well. I will let you AC guys know what I find out, if you are interested in changing your "receiver" cartridge to keep your AC in good shape. He also said that the C134A refrigerant (tetrafluoroethane)has very small molecules and typically lasts only about 5-years before it loses pressures and needs a new charge. All new to me.
