Hey guys I need opinions and I thought I might get some here. I know most of you aren't very opinionated :) but give it a try.

A number of months ago I purchased a part time kit for my 1994 FZJ80. I did not do enough research on it as I recently found out that once the kit is in the ABS will not function unless the hubs are locked. I have never had a vehicle with ABS before so I don't know if it's that big a deal to lose it. It will function if I lock the hubs, say for trips up the ski hill etc.

People who have the kit installed claim a 3-4 mpg improvement. Guys who don't have it call BS.

I already have one valued opinion that ABS is over rated. Stopping distance can be longer, but of course no sliding.

Since we just had the election here is the poll question.

Install it (the kit) or sell it?

Thanks

install it and let us know what you find out in mileage changes and driveability changes...

I guess it would depend on several factors, it have always drive a vehicle with ABS and don't know how brakes work otherwise then you might not want to. Since I know you have been behind the wheel of a vehicle without it then you know what to expect in certain conditions. Can the changes you make be reversed if you are not happy with it and everything is returned to normal? Does the kit cost offset the costs of savings and possibly other expenses due to some of the side effects? I'll throw my poll in but have always been of the opinion that a person should know how a car with no bells and whistles works and be able to control it so that when something breaks they can still drive it. I have always hated ABS and found it in a lot of conditions rather useless.

Let me get this straight. This is a kit for part time front drive correct?

Then I can imagine a mpg gain but I'd think that 3-4mpg is pretty impressive it that is right.

There is an '80 here at the school that has the part time kit installed. The owners bought it from some kids who were passing though and the current owners are NOT 'Cruiser types so don't ask how they like it. I know they had a front end accident with it a year or two ago but I can't say if it was related to the kit or crappy roads/driving.

It is no problem to remove the kit if I am not happy. It's just time consuming. It involves installing a spool in the t-case and installing manual hubs. If I don't like not having the ABS I could always sell it to one of the JDM guys without ABS (or do they have ABS?).

Cost wise I will find out. If the improvements of 3-4mpg are true then it will pay for itself.

The FZJ80 is all wheel drive.

More like full time fourwheel drive, that all wheel drive thing is more for like a rav4 :)

And I don't have ABS on my 81, but looking forward to your reviews of yours when its installed, I might even be able to help!

I'm aware of that. It seems that some of the earlier replies were talking about an ABS install rather than a part time front drive install.

That's what I though and posted my poll reply based on that assuption. The subject line is mis-leading. Great for a political poll though. :D

I am not a fan of ABS. If I want to come to a sliding halt, how can I do that with ABS? How else can you do Rockfords in a snow covered parking lot at the ski hill to make yourself think you're impressing the cute female parking attendant and then get chased out by the front end loader?

Sounds like a story!

Looks like I will be installing the kit with friends this Saturday. I asked my wife if she was ok with it as she is the main driver. She said "we have ABS?" She told me she will pump the brakes if she goes into a slide. Just like she always has.
