My pickup is a stock '93 with a 22RE and A340F automatic. About 118,000 miles on the odometer. It seems like it's not shifting out of top gear after coming to a stop. The traffic light turns green, and the truck takes FOREVER to get up to speed. It manually shifts fine. No CEL. When I finally got home and parked, I noticed the idle was a little rough (this could be unrelated).

It also gets confused while shifting into overdrive sometimes. It will shift into OD, then out, then back in. All without me moving the throttle. It has always done this; it never bothered me too much.

I wasn't sure where to start, so I decided to check the TPS according to the 4crawler page. However, the throttle lever is bottoming on the dashpot, before bottoming on the throttle stop screw. There is a 0.012" gap between the lever and throttle stop screw at rest. Is this normal?

Any other ideas what would cause my truck to stay in gear? Maybe a bad solenoid? How do I check these?

I see no one has replyed yet. So ill attempt not to make an ass out of my self. I know little to nothing about auto trans, but would suggest checking the online service manuals. The one I use is in a sticky on yotatechs site. 1990-95 4RUNNER service manual link - YotaTech Forums

I think you will be able to find some good info in there, I think the service procedure of all toyo autos are pretty common. However I am not speaking from experience.

Properly checking the TPS requires and OHM meter... I dont have the procedures but they are out there and are easy. Or you could just swap it out and see if it fixes it.

BUT it sounds like the trans isnt communicating with the ECU. There are a couple 4 pin harnesses resting on the top of the trans (one is green and one is blue IIRC) make sure they are connected and in good condition. Either way it sounds simple

Also make sure the wires are ok, and not cut or melted.

BTW my condolences on having one of slowest vehicles I have ever owned :D

LOL, gawd is it slow! Even with factory 4.56 gears, it's slow. I could install my extra 20R header, but figured it wasn't worth the effort.

I borrowed a Fluke multimeter and checked the TPS.

I also downloaded the factory manual and did all the transmission solenoid checks EXCEPT for the "driving down the street while checking the test connector voltage" check.

I'm starting to think it's the solenoids even though there isn't a code stored for it. Some searching of other forums reveals they can fail mechanically and not give a code. I ordered some aftermarket solenoids for it and I'm just gonna throw 'em in and see what happens.

It could be a solenoid. there are 2 solenoids that control the gears (and one for the TC) and they both work the gears (1st in on/on, 2nd is on/off, 3rd is off/on, 4th is off/off.....I think)

But it does sound like it is acting the way it acts when you unplug the solenoids...

Be carefull dropping the valve body. there are a few springs that will fall out and they are location specific!

my 85 4runner with the 22really slow and the torque-sucking A340F has had this problem and it was after i swapped motors and it was the wiring harness connectors above the starter headed towards tranny, the connectors were solidly connected but the wires were pulling out of the connectors ,i shoved em in tight and its been fine,so if you changed the starter recently or????? maybe this could help...good luck P.S. the automatic in mine is going goodbye anyway ,i got an 87 5 speed organ donor on the table thats the real cure to both our problems i think
