Got a line on another rig this morning with a winch and a camping kit. Sorry guys it's not a LC but I can't resist the price - much less than the cost of bringing over a used TD4.2 motor. :) Now I just need to get it approved by SWMBO.

Though, I am still looking for a 55 or 60 at the right price. ;)

It needs a few things fixed but nothing I can't handle (I think). Here's a few pics:

Okay back to working on the deck - really.

I guess that dent made it a right-off :lol::lol::lol::lol:
GG

The dent, a scratch on the RHS, and an the electric window that doesn't crank (had some practice there) and it was considered the bottom of the pile. Somebody shipped a whole bunch of vehicles but only had part payment. There is a nice shopping cart 2.4L Surf in the lot with lots of leather and bling if someone is interested. The vehicles have been sitting for a while and the Japanese company has to sell them, ship them back or the Canada Customs crusher (note - small "c"). I still need approval from the accounting department. I am sure she will see the light ($ saving/making) in this deal. ;)

BTW, anybody want to do a compression test after the long weekend?

I've got a compression tester with lots of doodad fittings. I wouldn't mind learning how to use the thing proplerly.

I've never done a compression test on my truck, so I would be interested.

safari

I live in abby also. Did your motor go on your safari? Thought they were bullet proof. What is the price on the other one?

When removing the glowplug or injector for compression test on vw's diesel in an aluminum head you have to be very careful. Penetration fluid the night before, warm up engine, and crack the plug, let cool down and then remove, as i have seen a number of cases there the head can be cracked.

We just removed an injector from a damaged head, and with an impact gun even, the one injector was tough coming out and it cracked the head.

Not sure if this is ever a problem with the Nissan's? Just a heads up though/

My number is 604 897 6280. I have a bj60, 1984 mint 230 kms, , waiting for a collector plate. My other diesel also has a camping kit in it and is diesel!!

My engine is fine. Factory crate TD4.2 engines from Australia was going for around $6,900 and the TD4.2TI was going for around $7,200. Its just that the price on this one is so cheap (if it is in decent mechanical condition) that I can resist buying it - even if just to sell it again.

Thanks for the tips. I have never heard of a problem with the TD4.2 heads. There have been issues with the heads on TB4.2 running on LPG. Maybe when we do the compression test(s) you might be available to oversee us novice diesel compression testers.:D I'll give you a call when I get a date.

Hijack: Here's another non-cruiser that could be of interest depending on how well it was built.
BuySell Classifieds : British Columbia : 1974 LAND ROVER 88 - 4x4. Looking to sell or trade my husband's ultimate 4x4 landrover. Not pretty, but super tough. This thing goes anywhere - which is why it's not as much fun anymore. Since he's souped it u
Light weight, 3B, 5 speed, D60 rear. If the frame is good would make an interesting bush truck with some real tires. I was into rovers before the 40 series cruisers caught my eye :o.
Still think you should build an oldschool patrol with diesel cruiser underpinnings John.

That's a cool Land Rover. I saw it adv last week. BTW, the GQs are old school. Nissan for years has been rumoured to build a new Patrol. Latest rumour is the replacement will be more like a shopping cart. :frown: The GUs (1998 and newer) have more bling but still have the TD4.2 as an optional engine over the 3.0L grenade) but with a turbo and in some cases an intercooler. Also, the GUs have truely massive axles, CVs and a better 4W disk brake system. A common mod in Australia is to transplant the axles from a wrecked GU into a GQ.

Does this one have the 4.2 turbo?. Whats the plan? Build it cause it's already beat so you can have a wheeling truck? Or strip the useful bits and flip it so you can finally buy a rusty project pig?

It doesn't have the turbo. That wasn't an option until 93 or 94. Right now I don't have a fixed plan for it. I won't even be testing compression until after the sale. Ya, I know it is a bit of a gamble. I am going down to the docks this Wed to pic it up and help the buyer/seller pick up the other vehicles and get them running. I will at least get a chance to see it running and drive it before handing over the $. If the kms are true, then the engine should be fine. If not, then it will be time to part it out. If my wife wants it and it's in good mechanical shape, then it will stay and the Tercel will go. If not, then, I will have to decide which one to sell and which one to keep. If I keep it and sell my current rig, then the dickie seat, the ladder, the roof rack and light bar will be going into it. If not, then, I will probably take the camping kit and the winch fom it for my current rig. If I end up with some money left over when all is said and done (ya I know that's unlikely), then it will go to pay some bills off and a lift.

Well, I have another Safari and it looks like one will have to go. SWMBO doesn't want to drive a RHD. :frown: Still haven't decided which one though.

Spent the better part of the day at Fraser Warfs wrenching to get the vehicles started. All had dead batteries except the Soarer. The Surf was a major pain. Completely dead batteries (wouldn't even start with a boost) and a totally dry fuel system. It took me a while to bleed it.I told the owner to go buy knew batteries because even if he did get it started jumping off his booster pack and another car, it would die as soon as he took the booster pack. Bloody computers.

Turns out the "damage" on the door is a stupid splash sticker. :) I was amazed she fired within a couple seconds after sitting nearly a year and a half. Beside the obvious collision damage, the paint is immaculate. The engine and drive train are nice and dry with no sign of any leak ever. After leaving it on idle up most of the afternoon and then the drive back to Abby she still stayed dry. The window regulator on the plastic wap door seems to be okay but the door is missing the window glass. :bang: One rear tire was loosing air. Tried to pump it up only to discover the valve stem was rotten. Good thing there was a spare - oh, but it was rotten as well. Okay, the tires were the same size as on my black rig, so put my spare on the new rig. We hit 91 south and before I knew it Ben (the guy selling the vehicles) is pulling over and telling me it feels wierd. I remember seeing the tire wrench and some extra wheel nuts on the seat and then remembered the notch in the rubber of the rear bumper. It occured to me that this rig probably had 33s on it and they took them off before shipping. Checked the wheel nuts and sure enough they all were very loose except the spare I had just put on. The buggers didn't bother to tighten up the wheel nuts.

I followed Ben back to Abby to watch the exhaust. There was not even a hint of smoke. The auto accelerates better than my standard from a stop. But the gearing is different and my standard 1-3 rd gears are spaced very close together. So now its time to get to work - on the deck and buy another vacuum. I think SWMBO is still not very happy I went out and bought another rig. But hey, deals like this don't come along very often. :meh:

Women, there's no understanding them. :)

She'll understand when you turn a profit.

Update: It looked like getting the glass was going to be a major pain. No one wanted to ship from Australia. Had no word from the other two guys bringing in parts from Japan from their contact. Best I could do was $231 plus tax and shipping from Ottawa - turns out a dealership there is brining in JDM parts. I decided to give the dealership in Langley a call. $195 plus tax. :D Yep, I am all smiles now. :D Parts guy says they will bring in JDM parts (usually in less than 2 weeks) provided I have the part number and pre-pay. I need to get that FAST program working soon. The other rig needs an idle-up diapham for the AC.

I got the grill and bull bar off but first had to grind off one of the foggies which was rust welded on to the bull bar. Nearly 2 days of WD40 soaking did no good. I have another mount so both foggies will go back on. Next to come off is the stock winch bar. The LHS chrome bumper wing is bent back about an inch. There is no buckle in the chrome so I think the "L" mounting plate for that wing was bent back when the PO had the fender bender. I'll take the plate off my spare stock winch bar so I can get Lordco machine shop to press it back to the right angle. The spare I plan to mount on the Black one. After that, its just a matter of fixing the two rear window regulators, setting up the DRL, putting in the new glass and she will be ready for the OOP.

I pulled back the carpets last night. It looks like no one ever entered that rig with shoes on. No dirt and no dust. Also, I had a good look underneath. All the suspension and steering bushings and body mounts look like new rubber. Next thing to check when I get time from work are the wheel bearings and brakes. Hopefully, it will be on the road for the next club meeting.

Cool!
I find WD40 doesn't hardly touch rusted on bolts, I've switched to PB Blaster and when that doesn't work, a propane torch.
GG

I had considered the torch but thought I would likely melt the wiring. I had seen PB Blaster at Crappy Tire but had always used WD40 or Liquid Wrench. I'll give a can of it a try. Got more crap in my eye last night. Too damn lazy to go and get the new safety googles - the ones I won at the last meeting - and put them on. Ya, stupid :censor:.
