My troopy is scheduled to arrive next week and its getting hot in Texas so I'm looking into air conditioning options. I've seen the under dash systems from Vintage and Old Air but I don't know if it matters that the vehicle is right hand drive. Is there anything under the dash that would interfere with any of the unit's components? Anybody with a RHD cruiser have experience with an aftermarket A/C unit?

G'day,

The factory LHD under dash unit will fit in your RHD Troopie, but the Vintage Air one that goes all of the way across will not. As Mississipboy said, the 2F stuff will fit with a bit of playing around on the engine, and all of the switches, etc. will work as well.

I used an air con radiator that I ordered from an air con shop in Denver, and made the mounting brackets myself. The evaporator and lines were all put in by an aircon shop.

The only really specific item you will need that is for RHD only is the air duct which goes from the fan on the firewall to the factory heater unit. This has a 45 degree bend in it to allow the underdash unit to fit.

Marv used to have a number of air con units, and I would guess he still does. 818-882-1238. I know that there are some after-market air con units made here for RHD, but I'm not sure who makes them.

You may find that the air con is not sufficient for the size of the troopie (at least if it gets over about 90). When I was in Phoenix one summer with my troopie, I found that putting a clear plastic shower curtain behind the front seats worked really well to keep the cab nice and cool. I used one of those shower rods that has a spring in it to wedge it against the wall, and put it across the top of the roof above the rain gutter. Then the only part which was open was a small space above the rod.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Josh

I have AC in my troopy. I will take some pics for you.

Pictures would be great. Send them to: cjbouressa@yahoo.com

I'll give Marv a call and see if there are any available. I assume they are used units though and would rather have new. If you come across the name of the aftermarket unit in AU, let me know.

I will ring the local air con shop here and let you know. While I hate to say it, I know that CCOT offers after-market air con units, and I'm sure they could be adapted to fit. I helped a mate in Santa Fe install one a few years ago, and the quality was pretty average. I think it would work short-term, though. The blower motor lasted about 2 years.

As for the used interior unit: there is not much to go wrong there. If the radiator is in good nic, and the blower motor works, than you should be pretty well set. I would bet that a used Toyota fan will out-last a new made-in-China fan. The rest of the stuff you could install new (that is what I did in my HJ47), and you will have a bsically new unit.

Marv may have after-market ones, I don't know. You could also try Vintage Air and see if they have the under-dash unit that does not go all the way across...

Tell us about your troopie...

Cheers,

Josh

CCOT is only 10 minutes away. I might try to stop by and see what they have to offer even though they seem to be a bit more expensive than the others.

Not many details on the troopy right now. I bought it from a gentleman in Heathecote, Vic and had it shipped out of Melbourne in late February. It is currently sitting in Panama waiting to be loaded onto a feeder vessel bound for Galveston, TX. Hopefully it will be in my possession by the first week of June. Its taken a lot longer than I had hoped and would definitely do some things different next time. I'll start a new thread when I get some good pictures.
