Hello! I am looking for someone to enlighten me. While doing an axle swap, I noticed this metal bushing or seal, whatever it is. It is inside the axle housing, not attached to anything. I already removed the oil seal, so I know for a fact that it is not that. Please help!

That looks like the metal shell/retainer from the inner axle seal, or what is left of one after the rubber has been pulled out. On an 80 front housing there should not be a loose, free-floating bushing in the tube; the inner seal is pressed into the housing near the differential and its outer shell can look like a thick metal ring. I’d make sure the entire old shell is out, clean up the bore, and compare the depth/diameter with the replacement seal before installing it. If the ring spins or comes out with light pressure, it is not something to leave in place. A straight-on photo with the seal removed and the ring’s diameter would confirm it. We specialize in 80/100s out of Hagerstown — happy to assist.
Thank you much. Ill be removing it.
