Hey everyone,
Every diesel Land Cruiser I've had as needed fuel lines replaced, nothing new, but intermittent coughing has been the a constant issue with my HZJ73 that I bought in February. I have replaced all of the soft lines, the primer, filter and the little pump return line at the fuel pump. Occasionally it coughs like it's got air in the fuel, and for the life of me I cannot figure it out. No leaks at the pump everything fuel related is dry, hard lines look good, and every time I pull the return line to do a "bubble test" it passes clean fuel. After replacing the lines and the primer, it can be good for weeks, then it'll cough a couple of times after pulling away after starting, or it'll randomly have a small stumble followed by a puff of black smoke and back to normal when accelerating. It's not particularly smokey, I do live at 6000 ft but I've got the pump pretty dialed in. It smokes on hard pulls up grades, which is my life living in Colorado, but under normal acceleration it's pretty clean, has all the power one can expect from a 1HZ at altitude. I'm planning on dialing in timing and possibly forced induction to clean up the smoke and give it a little more power, but I don't want to tackle any of this stuff until I figure out this issue. We've scoped the tank, looks squeaky clean and rust free in there. Any ideas? Is there anything I'm missing or places to look that I haven't thought of? Opinions/Advice welcome. Thanks!
