hi, since all u guys r local, i recently bought a 94 cruiser and i think my starter is going, but i am just wondering if there is a specific shop in the lower mainland that is well known and have a lot of experience working on the fj80's as my last resort is to take it to toyota...who i've already had problems with as some parts they say they cant get etc......nothing to do with my starter problem...... but there lack of knowledge with these vehicles is apparent and plus the bonus of a 110$ hr labour rate..

is truck unlimited recommended, north shore or who?, appreciate ur help

matt

Hi Matt, don't know if you do your own wrenching or not, but the starter is a fairly straight forward and common issue with the 80's. In fact, the starter on my '96 80 series was one of the first repairs I made on my truck. I bought the rebuild kit and installed it, but the repair was short-lived. I ended up buying a starter from my local NAPA dealer, and it has been relliable for 3 years so far. If you're not confident doing your own repairs, then you may want to look for a competent local mechanic that will charge less than the dealership. Talk to friends, family, people you work with, etc. and see if you can find a mechanic. Hopefully you will search the 80's section and you'll find that this and many other repairs are well documented and will save you thousands of dollars in repair bills should you decide to DIY. Good luck, Greg.

More than likely just the contacts in the starter, The hardest part is getting the starter out and thats not that bad. If your not going to do it your self take it to one of the auto electric outfits there used to be one on Scott Rd across from Goodyear.

I recommend looking around the 80 series section here on ih8mud. Try the search function....

I have never seen such a website for supporting vehicles than this one. Cruiser owners are eager to help assist.

Taking a cruiser to the repair shop can be expensive for sure. But the parts are not too bad in price. And will all the help on here you will surprise yourself. Also it is very satisfying to work on your own trucks.

The average guy on here is NOT a mechanic. But some are, and they all help.
