Greetings again gurus, I am loving the new 80 and slowly trying to get caught up with all of the issues the po didnt resolve/maintain. I am working on a list...long list of things to get headed my way from Cruiser Dan too. I am hearing some noise from the tcase I think? Dont know exactly how to describe it but a faint whirring would be my best attempt I guess. The noise seems worst at constant speed, not as bad when accelerating or decelerating. Am I correct in that this is a HF2A ( non vc) for this year? I have read also that its not really a t-case but more a center diff? Is this tc chain or gear driven? How involved and or expensive is a rebuild? THis is a high mile lc, nearing 300k but the price was good enough that I dont mind getting into ( within reason) some of the bigger projects.

Thanks again for the expertise!!!

Oh yeah btw where can I get a factory service manual for this truck and any idea how much$?

and one more...I am trying to get familiar with abbreviations here but what is PHH?

Welcome and don't worry about that PHH, thats on those fancy pants 1FZ-FE engines.
Your 91 has a sweet and mighty 3fe with no PHH.

oh and the faint whirring might be a few things.
low fluid in the TC or differentials
U joints dry
wheel bearings

good luck and keep us posted, just in case I get the faint whirrings I'll know what it is...

It is a center differential that applies power from the trans to the drive shafts. With the center diff unlocked, the drive shafts are turning independently of each other. In this instance (w/ open axel diffs) all the torque will be applied to any one wheel that loses traction. Meaning if you get 1 tire spinning, you’re stuck. With the center diff locked, the drive shafts are locked together and the truck becomes just like any other vehicle with part-time 4WD.

The TC is all gears, no chain, no VC, very durable. As mentioned, check your oil level, and then drain it. See if the oil is low or old and check the magnetic drain plug to see if there is abnormal amount of wear. If everything looks OK then refill with high quality gear oil or synthetic and see if the whining improves.

Factory manuals are hard to come by. If you are having problems finding one, Alldata will help you out until you do.

Welcome & Good Luck!

welcome, i second the fluid changes, i just did mine, nothing to hard there, also check to make sure your exhaust is not rubbing on the drive shaft, mine was sue to the rubber mount compressing over the years.

good luck

What?? Why would you say that?

I just called here to verify:

Toyota Publications 1-800-622-2033

Friendly, helpful lady answered immediately; 91 repair manual and wiring diagram manual are both in stock, $55 plus shipping.

Curtis

P.S. PHH = Pesky Heater Hose (93-97 only, as Frank said).

Ok, more info, and weird, too:

The above price quote is for a 92 manual (I asked for the wrong year). The 91 repair manual is $82! (Still in stock though.) Ya'll suppose there's really any difference besides the front cover??

Now that you mention it, the $$$ was the reason I didn't buy one. I have also wondered about the price between the two years.

I have been hoping to find one used or at a surplus price. I do have the FM for the electrical diagrams and they are exactly the same as what is in Alldata. That's the only reason I mention it.
