Hello, Im trying to help out my boss with his 91 4runner with the 3.0. Although Ive owned 4 yotas from this time period, as well as a 40, I have no experience with the 3.0 having avoided it myself.

PROBLEM:
After longer then average drives, without overheating problems or unusual behaviour the rig will refuse to start until cooled down. And when I say refuse to start I mean, you turn the key to run and all electrics come on but once you turn to run/start nothing, no rough start, no clicking, nothing.

We have already replaced the battery and checked the battery terminal connectors. I was going to start checking out the starter. I also was wondering where the "switch" that senses the clutch pedal being depressed was located.

Thanks

The switch should be right above the clutch pedal very much like the brakes switch. If it were automatic the neutral switch would be the thing to check. Note that you can bypass the switch. Also check your fuses, the fuses sometimes they will let moisture in and cause headches.

Your description of the problem suggest a weak connection somewhere in the starting circuit. Make sure your grounds are clean.

Ill be sure to pull the fuse and check it. Im also going to be hunting down a fix for the cig lighter while Im at it....got to love those brownie points.

Sometimes old starters heat have issues when they are on their way out. Try running a jumper wire when it is doing this and see if you can get it to turn over when you apply power to the solenoid. That will tell you if it's wiring or starter.
