91' 3FE Power Steering Pump fails....then what?

Unfortunately there are lots of parts on our 27 year old LC's that are long gone from OEM stock. Aftermarket isn't that bad, especially if that's your only choice. You may need to replace a couple under a lifetime warranty, but for the most part the way Toyota's are built the failure of the parts are usually not catastrophic. It's just labor and who isn't into working on their LC? Here's one with a lifetime warranty: https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/...1/4509642/1992/toyota/land-cruiser?q=power+st

Thank you, a lifetime warranty at that price does make it go down easier. Slow couple days at work, might be obsessing a bit too much. Ok, on then to the next question..ATF or PS fluid? Just kidding! already went down those numerous rabbit holes here on mud. I'm going with the ATF, just b/c the FSM says so. Thanks everyone, especially SUMMIT for talking me down from the OCD, and pointing out the lifetime warranty on the mastercraft.

Hi, These are pretty easy to do yourself . Mike
Thanks for the reply mike, there is a whole conversation above about how the rebuild kit does not contain a bushing or bearing and we went down the OCD rabbit hole a bit. Summit pointed a reasonably priced aftermarket one with a lifetime warranty, and got me to chill out on it. Appreciate it.

How has the FJ80 3FE power steering pump worked out? My 3FE ps pump replacements / rebuilds (have gone through several in the past few months and it's still whining) have been a huge disappointment and source of frustration. Cleaned the screen and it's still whining. Toyota still has the FJ60, FJ62, FJZ80 ps pumps available, but no dice on the FJ80 ps pump. 🤯😵‍💫

you can get aftermarket pump OE replacement here.

I'll check it out, thanks. Not sure how many more bad ps pumps I can handle. Maybe the silver lining is that this is just the excuse I need to spring from a 3FE to a still fully supported HZ1 1HZ engine conversion.:hmm:

So is their basically nothing really worth it in the aftermarket realm? I am about to either rebuild mine or replace with something from rock auto or one of those big box stores… guessing I should avoid this.

Like many others, I've rebuilt my stock pump many times. Then tried the NAPA lifetime guarantee pumps. Exchanged them a couple of times. I went ahead and ordered the pump in the link above from City Racer. So far so good. The body of the pump is the same as stock. The pully and reservoir are different. Wonder what it's off of? I just swapped everything over.

I am about to start my first PSP replacement and this thread is great information. Just curious though...

How has the "new" power steering pump held up for you thus far?

How did you put the pulley back onto the pump at the correct depth without over shooting the proper placement?

If you have any additional pictures of swapping the pulley and reservoir over that'd be awesome?

Those are the only pics I have of the swap. The bodies of the pumps are the same. So I just swapped the pully and the reservoir from the old to the new. Lined right up. The shaft is keyed. So a little lube and the pully can be pressed on by hand. I've only put a couple hundred miles on it so far. All good.

As a point of assembly, you should NEVER lube a tapered shaft and bushing connection. It will cause it to be seated too tightly and is very likely to split the hub.

It should be clean and dry when assembling. No anti-seize, oil, or grease.

How is this PS pump holding up so far? Any pump whining or noticeable performance losses compared to a new OEM one?

So far so good. It probably only has about 500 miles on it. Quiet and no leaks.

I understand you have to swap the pulley over but what is the reason for the reservoir swap? Also, how has this pump been lately now that more time has passed? Will be purchasing this for my rig very soon.

Hey I'm looking at replacing my power steering pump and was wondering if anyone has experience ordering from yoshiparts outta Thailand. The website honestly looks too good to be true
