They could work perfectly or they might have a different micron filter inside and let larger particles through. For that matter the adhesive they use might be lower quality and let go of the element. You might not notice the difference until after the damage is done. Or they are identical and are made by the same factory that makes them for Toyota. Going to be hard to tell the difference. Unless you do some kind of controlled test. Is it worth the possible risk?
 
that doesnt sound cheap. how much is an oe filter from toyota here?

i think i paid around $10 for oe but thats becase of a good disscount.
 
Ill send the seller a few questions, I mean they can pretty much copy anything and everything over there to make a buck... Wonder if it comes in the box they are supposed to lol.

@Tmax they are over 60ish here list price from the dealer.
 
Looking into this a bit more, Notice its missing "Toyota" from where it says Twin element....

If it is a knock off it is pretty expensive considering they are a few bucks more from the US
 
its about $4 less than the last batch I bought from CDan.

Look carefully at the pic and it says on the filter "Made in Japan" If that's true then it probably is legit.

ok i dont know what the list price is. a little while ago i bought i think 5 oe filters and i forget the price but it was not $60 each. maybe $20 or so at the most. $60 just sounds stupid. at that price, you can just put the money towards assumed anticipated engine rebuilts. the most i have ever paid for an oil filter is $50 and that is a Mercedes complex updeted retrofited filter at full inflated price. at the end of the day its just a pissy ass toyota part. $60 is crazy.
 
I'd have to pull up my receipt when I unpack the boxes but $60 for an OE oil filter seems insane, last time I purchased I bought a case of them from Regency. Fuel filter on the other hand isn't too cheap...
 
It all comes down to volume they sell, Look at the yards... I can get them for 7$ here or 4$ in the US!

The diesel 80 series uses a different filter than a gasser. The gasser filters are very reasonably priced at the dealers in Canada. The filter for the diesel is not reasonably priced at all, Its expensive in the US, and stupid in Canada.

I buy them by the case from American Toyota in NM (where CDan works). They're $20usd, which ends up pushing closer to $30 after exchange, shipping, and tax at the border. Usually Dan has to round up enough for an order from around the country. There's never many sitting on the shelf at any one location. Speaks to how little used they are in the North American market.
 
interesting that they are different. i dont undrestand why they just dont stick to one filter.

i always though there was two toy filters. the big one and the small one. the listing for my lexus is the smaller one.

dont know the part number off hand.
 
Different engine, different requirements. Plus side of things the 1HDT block is used in a ton of industrial and marine applications, and there are many cross over references for different filter brands.
 
Toyota did have a filter that works across multiple vehicle:

Diesel engine oils are different than gasoline engine oil so we should expect the filters to be different. Diesel engine oil has more detergent additives, which act to neutralize acids and deal the soot and combustion byproducts, which get into the crankcase through diesel blow-by.

You would think so, but the same filter that Toyota spec'd for the 3B, 2H is the same for the 2F, 3F-E. That filter also works on more Toyota engines, both gas and diesel. For instance, the Fram PH8A is the filter required for the 3B, 2H, 2F, 3F-E, 1FZ-FE and more Toyota engines. Looks like over a hundred different engines. You could easily go to Ford, Dodge, Fiat etc... and purchase a filter for your late model Toyota and vice versa. Looks like it works in certain tractors, forklifts and backhoes as well

funny you mention PH8A Phil

in the old days back in the 90's, thats what i used to run in 22R's. in fact i still have a bunch of new ones left. it was twice as long as the toy one and about $3.99 new. of course even back then we had the debate of not having a return block and oil draining back in the motor. the ph8 would fit even my lexus motor but there is too much junk in the way.


the oil filter debate is endless and its almost a wasted to participate as with internet these days, anyone is an expert and has extensive hands on experience with a couple of google searches. i for one, try to run diesel oil in everthing and if possible use synthetics. the oil change intervals and type is a whole other thing as well. for example the oil in my cummins motor is still mint after 10000 km. almost a shame to dump it out so i used to just put it back in the old mog as she didnt care if you pissed in it.
 
I hear ya Sass, I've been running Quaker State Defy in the gassers. Semi-synth with a higher percentage of zinc, good for the old iron, WIX filter
