Hi Everyone, I am new to IH8MUD and I am hoping I can get some info on converting my LJ 78 2.4L head to a 3L . I sent a message to 2rivers because I see he has done this transfer, is there anyone else who can help me? I am wanting to do the work my self. I heard word of a true "bolt on" head from Allhead that I would like to get so if anyone has info on this can you email me at tsshurr@telus.net or call 780-715-1179. Thanks.

why dont you just contact Allhead I have 2 prados and a BJ74
1st prado purchaced with 3l head with 2 year bumper to bumper warranty(before head problem was known) over 280,000 km runs strong uses no oil, big rad. and tuned to 105hp with 3" exaust no muffler
2nd prado bought from someone who lost money Fad person not a landcruiser lover. Got it super cheap and put the second generation 2lte , I believe it is better, eg. it doesnt have the exaust manifold gasket sticking out past the manifold , has more water passages and is of different casting material
besides tearing the 2nd prado apart completly and puting it back togethor. I know nothing compared to the other GURUS on this site.

LIke he says (but then again he's not a GURU :D )....just call Allhead and order a big heavy box of parts. Or source the parts here in Canada... I cant comment on which will last longer or which is the better route. Like Aaron, I think the upgraded part 54121 is an upgraded casting than the original and it mighjt suit your needs well - provided you install it with care and ensure you have NO COOLANT LEAKS OR AIR IN THE SYSTEM WHATSOEVER. If you re-use hoses, continually check them after surgery to make sure they are OK. The part for a 3L head is 54131 I think off the top of my head. Thinking back to a conversation I had with someone on here - the head supplied from Allhead may not be a 3L head (I think) call them to confirm this. You might want to ask them about this. There is another source in NZ that sells a complete head / cam setup already - last time I heard it was around $1100.00 NZ dollars w/o shipping www.autoparts.co.nz I will vouch for Allheads kit tho - it was expensive but the truck gets abused daily and hasnt had a stich of problem since - I think the bleed system they install in the head is critical to shunting off any air potentially trapped in the head to the expansion tank and this is something you wont get on a stock Toyota part.

Hey,
I'm currently getting the head replaced on my 1990 LJ78 with the 2LT-E motor. Canyon Creek toyota in Calgary carrys the 3L Allhead head. According to Jeremy in the service department they have replaced 30 of these heads with no problems, and says Allhead is the way to go.

Cheers,
Kevin

canyon creek put the new head on my truck when it went (Bought the truck from them, was supposed to be fixed under warranty, they ended up screwing me and had to pay for part of it...i'm very bitter). But good news is that i've had no problem with the head or with overheating at all since then, they have good mechanics (Jeremy is a good guy), but their management are a bunch of d*ck heads.

Dont let them jerk you around if you go down there...

Hey Fish,
Jeremy at Canyon Creek toyota assured me complete coverage of all costs within the one year head warranty period. There is some kind of stamp on the back of the head that changes color if it's overheated, thats the only thing that supposedly voids the warranty.

Could you be a little more specific about your experience with them?

Should have my LJ78 back from them next week. I drive 60 000 km a year so well see what happens!!

thats odd the thing these engines do (overheat) is the only thing thats voids the warranty ! I did my own bought it from 4wl auto in Calgary the guys there seem to know what there selling . I put the 3l head on parts ;head and head bolts, gaskets, new toyota water pump, timing belt and thermostat for around $2100.00 including shipping plus $200.00 to have valves swapped ,shimmed and ground . painful but not to bad. Russell

I am glad you guys are doing well with the upgraded heads , maybe we can get the value back in these machines Prado's and Hilux's that we seem to know and love.
