87 trans to 83 transfer case?

The 83 should be an L52. You can put a W-56 in it's place, but I think you might have some driveline length issues. Check with the guys at Marlin.
An 87 tranny will be approx 5" longer than the 83, so the driveshafts will require modification. Also, you will need to relocate the tcase support mount.
Is the 87 tranny from a carb or EFI truck? 87s w/carb would have a G54. only 4Runners and EFI trucks had the W56. The W56 is the stronger of the two, plus it uses a top shift t-case, which is what the 83 should have.
