I bought this 1986 yota pickup two months ago and the motor is tired to say the least. It's a 22r with all emissions crap deleted, weber and a cheap header. Motors using oil and a lot of coolant. So i've decided to can the 22r and go with a 22re for better fuel mileage, power, ect. I bought this good running 90 2wd pickup for 300$ and plan on using it as a donor. While its apart i'm gonna put a new clutch in and i've noticed many different clutch kits for years 84-95. Should i go with the clutch for my 87 and just use that flywheel? i was under the impression that 84-95 trans/clutch/flyheels were all interchangeable. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I had a 22r to l43 4speed then swapped to w56 and used the same clutch n flywheel. W56 came on the 22re and i had no problems. I would keep your clutch. They last a long time.

All the 22r/re transmission bolt together. However, the input shafts for the transmissions differ some in the new generations. Although I believe that the G52, W56 and R151 all use the same clutch. The flywheels will differ some too - lighter for car applications, heavier for trucks and even heavier for the turbo.

In short:
Keep your flywheel, buy a clutch for the tranny you are putting behind your new motor.
