I have an old hilux with a very light clicking noise occasionaly (maybe 10 to 15% of the time), and a mystery spasm that pops up once every couple of months....

today I had the mystery problem, I was towing a truck to the mechanic (weighed about 3 tons), and the clicking noise poped up but much louder than usual. about a minute later i started feeling small spasms of power loss and after a little bit of that a big loss of power. at that point i put the clutch in and let out the gas and the motor felt like it was going to die (like it was running out of fuel) at which point i turned off the car and stopped.

my body hoped out of the truck and we had a look under the hood, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. so i started it up again and...... fine. cool. off we go

i had half a tank of fuel so thats deffinetley not the problem....

it also happened 2 months ago but a little different. i pulled into a street to turn around and when i put the clutch in to put it in reverse it felt like i was running out of fuel again (there was no clicking noise). turned it off, turned it on again....... walla. no mas. I might of had a little bit low fuel at the time but i dont think that was the problem.

so wtf is this mesterious spastic attack that my car is suffering from..... it couldnt be dirty tank because i had my fuel tank cleaned and filter changed, and my injectors cleaned, tips changed and calibrated (one of my pistons wasnt firing) i also put in a clear pre filter so i can see the level of dirt in the fuel. its allready got a fair bit of of dirt in there, but its not totally clogged.

no, I will see if I can get one.

I was listening to the motor closely and I can hear the ticking noise much more clearly with the hood up. It sounds like its coming from the injection pump.

I'm going to install an additional fuel pump as a lift pump. is it ok if I use one of those electric gasoline pumps? gona put in one of those external ones they use for carbs, not the ones in the tank those are a pain.

I'm not sure about that. I would see what kind of pressure you should be running off your injection pump now. IIRC, diesels run a pretty high pressure and an inline gas pump might not have enough pressure.

I'm having trouble finding the PSI of this system, the injectors open at around 140-150 psi.

the thing is, these L series motors do not have any lift pump what so ever. the injection pump is doing all the work :O so imagine that the pressure before the injection pump must be negative......

it must be a good pump because alot of other trucks that have factory lift pumps that go out apparently will kill the IP very shortly afterwards. my trucks got 200 000 ks with no lift pump lolz...

at this link: 1991 Toyota Hiace 3L : Veggie Oil Conversion Vehicle Database he uses one of those 4-6 psi pumps to help the IP to push the thicker biodiesel, but mentions that it would probably be a good idea to use without biodiesel.

its not meeting any required pressure, its just helping the independant IP out a little bit.

also im geussing theres no pressure regulator before the IP, so i think using a pump with to much psi could put to much unregulated pressure on the IP and perhaps harm it.

Is my line of thinking correct or am I missing some important information on this?
