Well I live in Charlotte NC and my Europe import LJ 70 has an issue with something broken in the cylinder. Anyway, I need a new engine. after all it is 30 years old. So I am looking at e bay and it seems jdm is the only real choice. I have the crusher at Toyota Techs in FT mill SC. 40 plus year LC guys. I just need to get the engine and they will make it work, but I would like to keep as easy a possible. Anyway, here is what is on e bay to pick from it seems the 1kz versus the 2lte. Which one is easier and what issues should we be worried about? Are they the same transmission? which one performs better. thanks Rich

The 3.0 1kzt can suffer from a cracked head, the same as the 2.4 2lt but is a lot less prone to it, I've overheated mine a few times due to clogged rad but nothing long term damage wise from it, massive improvement in power with the 3.0 aswell, they both use an r series gearbox but use different bell housings, if going with the 1kzt go with the non ECU version as it's much easier to set up

You're probably better off just repairing your existing engine. Yes it's old, but so are the ones you're looking at replacing it with. There is no real guarantee the new motors won't have their share of issues either. Bottom end of the L series motors is pretty tough. Put a new head assembly on yours, and put your extra money into an intercooler and some other improvements. Just my two cents. If you are really insistent on a new motor, as said above the 1KZT (non electronic) is a pretty decent motor.

Hello,

x2.

Have the engine repaired. The bottom end of the L Series engines are quite dependable if operated properly.

I have not seen a 1KZ out of a 70 series for sale from any of the JDM vendors, seems like most come out of Surfs and they all need an ECU.

I have a crusty trusty LJ73 here as my shop truck and could be persuaded to part it out (have a BJ43 body here that would look good on the LJ frame)
