i just bought this Toyota and im having some problems getting it started first of all the fuel pump stopped working i replaced it and now im not getting any power to it i hooked up a toggle switch to it cause it a crawler who cares right.. im getting fuel pressure but still not starting it will start and run off of starting fluid just not gas i hocked up noides to the injector plugs and there not pulsating but both wires to the plug have power i put in a new used ECU still nothing i put in a new AFM still nothing i dont know what else to do in trying to get ready for moab next weekend and i still have tons to do before im able to take it PLEASE HELP!!!

Noid lights do not work too good on the older Toyota injectors. More then likely the igniter mounted to the top of the coil is bad or not hooked up. The igniter sends an RPM signal to the ECU, if the ECU does not see an RPM signal it will not fire the injectors. The injectors should have power to one side all the time, the ECU supplies a ground which causes the the injector to fire and squirt fuel into the engine. The 22RE fuel injection is a very basic EFI system, no crank or cam position sensor, batched fired injectors etc, very simple compared to today's EFI engines.

So now it's running but not very good I changed the fuel pressure regulator to see if that will do anything but it didn't I didn't know if its not getting not enough or too much fuel it will run good at 4000 rpm but I have to start it with it floored and it won't idle any thoughts oh and the cold start injector won't inject ether I don't know what else to do

Well, I guess you need to check the TPS and the Cold start injector time switch to begin with.

Rodger Brown, 4crawler, has good write up's on both those topics on his web site.

I would also check all the intake tubing and vaccum hose for leaks. Make sure there is no unmeatered air coming in.

Also, how is your timing?

Look for vacuum leaks, I had a similar issue till I realized the brake booster vacuum line was not connected.

Too many people think their issue has something to do with the cold start injector, unless the coolant temp is below 40deg the cold start injector will not be triggered. Poor starting often time has to do with fuel pressure dropping from the fuel rail, bad FPR or Fuel pump check valve, and or a faulty idle air control valve.

When I brought my 86'Runner back to life I had to fix the following, corroded fuel injector splices, faulty igniter, faulty fuel pump, and a bad injector, oh and reconnect the brake booster vacuum line.

Things to check....
Plastic crossover tube, cracks will allow unmetered air into the engine causing a overly lean condition and poor performance.
Check the air gap on the signal generator in the distributor and or replace with new.
Serviceability of the ENTIRE ignition system, cap, rotor, wires and plugs (replace with NGK)
Ensure ALL grounds are present and free from corrosion
Proper adjustment of TPS
Proper ignition timing set

Good luck!

okay so i have went threw all the ground wires i replaced some but most looked good went threw all vacuum all seemed good i was talking around and someone told me to get a new pickup coil could that be my problem?? and why would my fuel pump not be turning on is there a relay somewhere cause i replaced my AFM and i though that would fix that problem

The fuel pump will ONLY stay running once the engine fires up. As the engine draws air past the air flow meter it closes a switch which keeps the pump running. On the drivers side fender under the hood there is a fuel pump test connector, with a paper clip or piece if wire bridge the connections, this will keep the pump on so long as the key is in the run position. A supercharge on Judd will turn up the exact location of the connector.

Are you getting spark, if so there is no need to replace the signal generator.

Common problems on older Toyota EFI 22RE 4cylinder engines

Circuit opening relay....this is like a fuel pump relay, you will hear it click when you turn the ignition key to start

Ignitor..... One of this components jobs is to provide an RPM signal to the ECU, no RPM signal = no start even if you have spark

Faulty wiring and grounds... The injectors will always have a power signal, the ECU provides the ground which allows the injectors to work.

Faulty air flow meter....this rarely is the cause, but as the originals continue to age more and more have been found bad. The airflow meter is a gate attached to a spring and a potentiometer, also there is a temp sensor and micro switch. The movement of this gate, buy the engine sucking in air, tells the ECU how much air is entering the engine also the movement of this gate closes the micro switch which keeps the fuel pump running.

Try and find a Factory Service Manuel, FSM, for your year truck, this will greatly help you troubleshoot problems.

Okay so it was running great but it wouldn't idle I checked the coil it was bad I replaced with a new one and all plugs and wires now its nothing but backfiring wont start I've rechecked All that I have done and everything is perfect according to the manual could the timing go bad in like fifteen min not running or do you think that something else is bad

Recheck your plug wires, I know you said they are correct, timing does not go bad.

Check your mass airflow if rhose go bad they won't send the signal to the open circuit relay to turn on your fuel pump also they will cause it to not idle. One way to check is to stick as long screw driver in it to keep it open or to take it off the air box itself then have a buddy crank and start the truck while you pay with the meter in your hand. Be careful though because if it is backfiring it could singe some hair.
