Hey everybody. I jus picked up a killer 82 long bed 4x4 with 22R but I'm having some issues I can't seem to figure out. Every now and then it starts to bog down and run poor puffing some black smoke. Then if I stop for a minute it'll clear up and run fine. It's a stock carb, stock motor freshly rebuild. I've played with the carb and some other small adjustments thinking I figured it out, but nothin. If the rings were bad it would always blow some smoke right? I dunno, if someone can help me diagnose her it would be much appreciated.

Sounds the AAP is leaking fuel. Pull the vacuum line to see if there is fuel present. If there is there's fuel in the line then its leaking...Common problem. Another would be the choke linkage is binding. Black smoke is unburned fuel- blue smoke is oil burning.. (rings/valve guides)

Also check your fuel filter, but the AAP or AAP diaphragm is the likely cause.
Luckily the AAP is actually outboarded from the main carb body itself, and runs (if memory serves) parallel to the valve cover.
A thorough rebuild kit will have the diaphragm in it, and it's a quick fix.

Good luck!
