Recently after going thru my recent barn find of a 400 buck 1st gen purchase, i have decided to go ahead and overhaul the top end. At 150k the 22r hasn't had anything done to it so far. I figure since I am positive the head gasket is done and it has a bit of black smoke on acceleration as well as it's been sitting for the past 5-6 years I might as well get it done and out of the way.

Can anyone tell me if they know of a machine shop in the Denver area to rebuild the head? Or would it be easier/cheaper to get one already overhauled online someplace and have one shipped to me? Also which online place would be best?
I just want it to be stock no need for it to be a serious off road rig......

Engnbldr.com has the best bang for the buck. also get his timing chain kit as well. If you have an 81 toy it's probably got the dual row timing chain which tend to be stronger but since you are already pulling the head off it's wise to sink the extra cabbage and do the chian as well. Buy a FSM and do it yourself. There are also DVD's and plenty of info on the web concerning this.

Thanks I rounded up an overhauled head, all the gaskets and the dual row timing chain. Its all going to happen this Saturday. I cant wait to get it back on the road to use it as my DD. My 40 has some serious work that needs to be done...
