Great news bluey ,suspension next??
[/quote]

yeah, proberly suspension next as rear tyres rub atm at full/almost full articulation. really want tube bar first, have winch but no bar  . taking ages, might need to see if anyone else will make one :-\

Bluey, some guy in Sidney is selling his winch bar. Check Outer Limits.

Dave

Bluey if you put new suspension on it will go better off road especially with the new diff and youll less likely need a winch :flipoff2:.
Also if you put a winch and bar work on now the old springs will sag further :-[

Your 73 will look much smarter with a 2in lift than a 73 with winch and sagging front end and be better by the mile on road 8)

more mods are off the cards atm. minister of war and finance not happy about locker. but dear, we really need it .... :D

here is test fit of my standard driveshaft to the 80 series diff

this one shows both diffs removed. man, this was heavy to lift in to mount, i had no jack to do this

Pity about the war office but these are only temporary set backs ;)
Did the flange need to be changed ?
How about some pics of the 73 tearing up Tassie :D

Bluey, for that trip you're taking over Easter, you need a 'roo bar, don't you? It's all just for her and your safety!
;)

With the twins coming, do you have seatbelts in the back? Many Japanese imports* do not have belts in the back. Is your 73 a Japanese import or an Oz model?

Dave

* to the Americans on the board: some Toyotas in Oz are vehicles imported from Japan by individuals or companies other than Toyota Australia

not sure if meant to keep adding to this thread? am i meant to start a new thread along the lines of "...my cruiser build up" or something???

anyways, yes i have 3 rear seat belts in back, middle lap belt and sides are normal lap/shoulder belts

did you notice quality uprade by previous owner?

cork in 12v accessory socket in boot section :D

That is a clever way to arrange the baby seats. Those little young 'uns will be having fun back there...

I must be blind but what accessory socket? :) You'll appreciate it when you need to install a VCR or DVD player back there.

Dave

:D

now i've gotta wait till the twins get big enough before they can go out wheeling

Ahh, I see it now, LOL. I was expecting a cigarette lighter looking unit.

Dave

am now having gearbox problems

basically, couldnt downshift to second, had to select 1st first (and that is difficult) then go to second. spoke to driveline mob and reckon worn synchros, complete stripdown to repair. AU $1200 to $2000 .

have put in light oil and can now selelct 2nd, bit difficult still. about to replace clutch master & slave cylinders, flush and new fluid to hopefully increase clutch strength? do you guys have any other ideas

and 40 series gearbox/transfer for sale. would this go in/low amount of mods?

cheers
Lance

I'd go for a reco gearbox and swap it in. Messing with new master and slave if anything just will make you put the project off for later :)

If you want to buy the gearbox out of the 40 series, make sure it is a BJ42 not an FJ40/HJ45, the input shafts are different. Plus you get an transfer case with the smaller idler shaft than what yours has. Maybe it's no big deal, or you can swap your transfer over. Does your BJ73 have a vacuum shift 4WD? The BJ42 has a manual shift.

The 40 g/box seller is right, the top tranny cover will be different and has to be swapped so your shifter exits at the same hole on the floor.

Dave

Lance did you try Jakes suggestion regarding double clutching?
You can get the Master cyl for under $50 if you look around.

If you have to go down the new gearbox path get a reco one .The large companies are doing them for $2200 with 50k and 2 year warranty on the mainland including t/case.
Im not sure if you are aware that when you buy a box advertised as reconditioned,it must be done to the Aust Standards .The Standard was put together by The Automotive Reconditioners Association and lifted into law.
This gives the big chains economies of scale that are hard to beat on price and quality.
They also offer fixed price and no quibble warranties
When you get a mechanic to REPAIR a box he is not bound by the Standard although he is still required to warranty his labour and parts he replaced. This is where it gets murky as you then have to prove it was his fault which can be hard after a box blows .
Unless of course you know him well.
If the double clutching works use it as breathing space.

haven't actually been for a drive yet since Jake suggested double shifting. going out soon tho, will try then :)

info on reco g/boxes v good, didnt realise there was a standard now. guys here telling me big gamble on reco's, but that doesn't seem right anymore. do you have company names that i should look at rosco, even tho trying not to have to do this if i can help it. double shift :D

dave, my 73 has the hydraulic shifting transfer, which is good and bad i guess. thought the 40's were manual. this sounds like to much work for me, i'm running out of time to get things done myself (move out of my house in 2 weeks, double garage. moving to new place, well don't have a place to move yet so don't know if will have garage. and will be renting  )

thanks guys, will try some double shifting and prices on clutch bits

Lance

Everyone has a bad g/box story whether it was rebuilt ,reco or even new.
Im not trying to put you off going local as its still the best option if you can get a good deal.
I havent been able to track down which companies do it on a national basis.
I believe its unlikely they will sell direct anyway. You normally have to go through a shop that stocks that brand eg like Repco,Gem engines ect
I did find a list of every gearbox rebuider in Vic/Melbourne
http://www.whosbusiness.com/vict74.htm

Maybe the best way is to ring a few of them and get an idea of what they are offering on the mainland and then see if you can replicate the deal down your way.

In regards to the AS for gearboxes you maybe able to access them for free if you have a student # ;).Its my understanding they come in about 10 years ago for manual gearboxes only .Apparently they couldnt agree on what constituted a reco auto .

Some other good places to compare prices is in the 4x4 Trader,Just 4x4 and Just Parts

One good bit of news .I always look at the prices of new, used and reco engine and g/boxes in the trader mags and I have seen the prices fall about 3-4 times in the last 9 months.I reckon an engine or gearbox has dropped about $500.Probably due to our dollar being stronger.
Double clutching can make them last for years :D :D :D
