Greetings,

I'm usually over in the 55 section, but am helping my MIL restore a '78 Toyota Chinook. Based on what I have seen, I believe it is an N20 (RN20?), has manual steering, and is 2WD.

So here's where I need some help: I can turn the steering wheel all the way left, and it feels normal while driving. When I turn the wheel right, however, I cannot turn the wheel all the way. Just come to a point (prematurely) where the wheel stops. And it is hard stop too.

Any ideas what the culprit might be?

TIA:beer:

take the steering box off (i assume it's manual steering?) and see if it will go thru it's whole range of motion...if it does then start replacing all the nickel-and-dime steering parts (TRE's, tie-rods, relay rod, idler arm, pitman arm, etc....)

Alrighty, thanks @SKULLYOTA! What are you doing in this forum?

Yea my guess is something in your box is stopping you from turning. Is your engine a 20r?
Yup @Toast , 20R. Anything I should be especially aware of if I go through the box? Guessing I can do a search for a steering box rebuild and find some good info too.....

I have a 1985 Toyota 4x4 (solid axle yo!)

If you narrow it down to the box being the problem, I would get a reman one if they're available. I tried rebuilding a manual box once, from an old chevy 4x4...not worth the effort

Yeah. I just read a pretty detailed instructional blog on the rebuild. May just farm it out, but who knows. Maybe I need another project

As this is a '78, am I correct in thinking that I can remove the box without removing the steering column @Toast @SKULLYOTA?

yup, should be able to.

Just unhook the rd from the box that goes to the steering wheel and undo the pitman arm and you should be able to pull it after undoing the bolts holding it to the frame.

I was gonna say put power steering on it, but I think the 20r head doesn't have holes for it. The box cab be rebuilt but it's a big job. I would source a new one. Or better yet put power steering on it. The box can be detached without having to remove anything. People normal throw manual boxes away..... Should be able to score one for cheap
