I have a'90 HZJ73 from Japan (183,000kms) , trani (4 speed automatic) temp light coming on, on hills, not sure why. Could it be:

-the additional weight I am carrying: 1000lbs or so of equipment (front/rear bumpers, winch, roof rack, ladder, fuel carrier, lights, etc.

-Trani cooling system is plugged i.e not working properly

-simply wear and tear

-faulty/failing part inside trani - seal, O-ring, other?

Any ideas what it might be and how to prevent this from happening:

-Install additional trani cooling divice
-Install turbo to get additional power
-switch to manul trani

Thanks in advance for your comments/suggestions

Shouldnt be overheating with that load. Is the fluid topped up, is it fresh fluid, use lucal tranny additive in it when you can.

You can install a cooler but it wouldnt be addressing your problem. WHat does the manual say for overheating tranny?

Are you dropping it out of 4th gear? There is no lock up in 3rd on the A440F so if you are climbing a hill in 3rd the Torque converter is generating major heat and the only source of cooling for the fluid is the lower rad tank. I would get an extra tranny cooler on there for sure. If you can get an extreme valve body in there it will give you 3rd gear lock up and tighter firmer shifts all round.

Thanks Louis, As you know my truck and weight, I hope you're right with it not being the weight. The fluid was flsuhed and changed in Nov/05 with only 25,000 kms or so on it since (Baja and local truns), I am wondering it was not manually shifting down from Drive (4th) or a plugged cooling system (small rad. Will check into this. I have added more weigh during the trip but after the initial temp light on. Weight such as a Eezi-Awn tent and African Outback drawer system. Hopefully it will ficx easy. More later when I return after two weeks waiting here in Monticello, UT. Thanks again, Jan
