'71 wiring diagram (again)

New question regarding my Pig wiring diagram:

From what I've read, if I use the wire that contains the dash idiot light for the alternator to excite(power) the #1 post on my new GM 12si alternator, I WON'T have to install the in-line diode. I know there are those who will dispute this, but it's worth a try, and will retain my idiot-light get-your-attention warning feature (I'm also installing a voltmeter).

But once again, I CANNOT read the Haynes reprint of the factory wiring diagram well enough to read WHICH wires that go into the instrument cluster fire up the idiot light, or even where that light is.

Help?

IIRC it goes to the voltage regulator from the idiot light. yellow with white stripe.

Thanks, I'll look in that direction. If that's the case, I should be able to take that wire directly and plug it into the GM alt.

in my experience, if you have a charge warning light in the circuit, no need for diode.

I cannot recall if the gauge light is powered by the cluster or by the voltage regulator. So, check that before you hook it up.
