I started building this rig in November of last year. I was bored and wanted to build something that I could take my time on and not be rushed. There is a lot of copy and paste going on here so it might be a little out of order.

This is going to be a slow build . But the Idea is swapping in a SBC 350/TH350 And using the front half of a NP203 as a range box for a toy Tcase. But right now I am working on the rust.
Here is what I am starting with.

I plan on using sheet metal if I can find something left to weld to.
Thankfully I am going for more function then originality.

I tinkered around a little more and removed the heater so I could get the trans cover off. The water hoses were so brittle they tore with very little pressure.

I wish my jeep had this kind of access.

I am pulling the front clip and thus far only one bolt hasn't broke.I am going to have to get a new drill bit for the easyouts.

The anti wrap bar will be solid I plan on a solid mount on the axle and a shackle mnt at the trans cross member. and the springs already have the add a leaf. There is already some kind of over load coil springs under there now. I will have to take a picture of them later.
Here is a pic after I hit the front end with a hammer and all the rust fell off.

The bumper was a real pain in the @ss to remove. The previous owner wanted the stk piece of tinfoil to stay . It was braced riveted bolted and welded. Why someone would go through all that and not build a stronger bumper is beyond me.

Wife says I should stop because my son is having plenty of fun with the T.L.C. as it sits.

Removed the windshield frame.Had to drill out all the freaking screws.Pulled out all the wiring, switches ect. Pulled off all the door hinges. Still trying to figure out why I did this to my self. Originally had planed on installing 3/4 chev running gear, power steering and fixing holes in the floor boards then calling it good . Not a stinking frame up restoration. Damn internet gives me crappy ideas!

Ok I have the tub off and now its time to get down with the frame. Finally I can start building this thing instead of tearing it apart. So here is the battle plan . Clean the frame and prepare it for welding on engine and trans mounts. Mount steering and suspension probably have to stop for fall quarter after that.

Hi All:

Waycrazy, you seem to building a collection! (I see a CJ-7 and a classic Bronco in your yard.)

You are making good progress with this tear-down and re-build. What are your intentions for this rig?

BTW, you are located in an *great* spot to access lots of good 4wd trails! (Naches and Rimrock.)

Good luck!

Alan

Alan ,
I do seem to have a small collection going on..LOL The Jeep is a cj5 not that it really matters to much. I love were I live . I can leave my front door and get to rimrock and never touch pavement. Something to be said for having some of the Pacific Northwest's best wheeling trails in my back yard.
My plan for the cruiser is simple and reliable. Probably only run a 35" tire ,Spring over w/ XJ rears, stk Front springs flipped. This probably will spend most of the time banging against trees in the summer and deep snow in the winter. So I dont see the need for fancy suspension. :DDid I miss any of your questions? Feel free to ask I like to talk .

I got tired of Grinding cutting welding ect ect. So I decided to crack open the transmission and throw in a B&M Transpak.

Did I mention my daughters cat loves to be a bothersome pain in the ass shop cat? He loves to be in the middle of everything and of course if there is Trans fluid hanging around he has to stick his white fir in it. He jumped up right in the middle of my open transmission

My blockhugger headers is getting in the way of the knock sensor. I think I can add a 90deg elbow. But I am not so sure that I wouldn't get some false readings. Anyone got any thoughts or alternitive's ?

I set the body to see what needed cut and so I could mock up things like steering sliders body armor ect. Made me feel pretty good to see my rig to look like a FJ agian. But it didnt last to long when I started to mentally tally all the work that needs done. It will be my first and hopefully the last attempt at body work.:P

One thing I learned about steering box mounts is make sure they are strong! I played hell with the stock box mount on my CJ and I dont want to relive that nightmare. (Not much fun weaving between trees on a tight nasty trail with your steering box ratchet strapped to the frame. )

UUUUUIGH!!!

Gives me a twitch seeing this project and where you're at w/ it!!
Did a similar build, but I was dumb enough to go THROUGH w/ the body work.

So glad it's over!!
Not saying that it wasn't a great experience, but I'd never do it again.

Good luck w/ the build brother!!

When I set up my transfer case in the frame I wasn't as concerned about a flat belly. Since I dont get into the rocks to much. So I cleared my tub without mods. But if you want the flat belly check out chicago's build . He had to cut up the fuel tank sink in the tub.

Chicago thanks for the good luck . Dont worry all this body work is making me twitch too.LOL I decided that I am going to cut out the rust, weld in some sheet metal and use a old jeeper trick and cover my ugly body work with rock sliders and corners. I found that I can patch it up and make it look good, but the time spent to do it only to cover it up with protection isnt worth it. So get rid of the rust so it doesnt spread and cover it up . I wont tell if you dont. Hehehe. I have the tub in primer I will get some more pics up so everyone can have there web wheeling fix.
I did take a little break to remind me why I am doing all of this building stuff though. Here is a link to the pics.
