Made a bit of progress

Checked the lower rad hose for collapsing and found it wasn’t
Managed to get a digital thermometer and also picked up some R-20 chemical to put in the cooling system which I have got in there at the moment
Won’t have time to pull the water pump for a few days yet so that will have to wait
But I used the vehicle today to get some cattle in from their paddock and with both thermo fans running, coolant temp seemed to stay at a reasonable 85*C average
I will leave the solution inside the system for a few days and drain it and see how we go after that

I know what is causing your heating problem. Your Land Cruiser is probably right hand drive and you have a left hand drive water pump. (joke)
Anyone know how many RHD v LHD 40s were made?
I'm guessing LHD 40s are strongly in the minority?

I can guarantee you every dump that exists in remote/rural Australia will have at least one 40 series in it. Plenty of people especially cattle stations still use them simply because of how tough they are, but the 70 series are more popular

Bad news…

Had the fj40 parked in the shed ready to pull the water pump last weekend, noticed a puddle of water under the car, and traced it to the sump plug. So drained oil and got a decent amount of water out before a steady stream of oil from the sump… left a bucket under the engine for a few hours as water continued to drip from the sump for at least 2 or 3 hours afterward..

So either bad head gasket or the chemical I introduced to the system ate a hole through the cylinder wall due to bad corrosion, either way the engine is coming apart

So thanks to all for your input about how to fix the problem I had but looks like I’ve installed another dud engine… I didn’t let this motor get to the stage of being so hot that I cracked the head, so I’m assuming bad corrosion in the water jackets..

Oh well at least now I can stop chasing my tail

Thanks all once again…
Kris
