HI my 96 LCII (lj79) in India runs the 3L engine with th G40 4 speed transmission.I have had it a year and a half now and absolutely love it.These cars a re so well built and even though its clocked 122000 km it feels like new.
Hovever the 4 speed sometimes gets a bit annoying on the highway and i really want to swap it to a 5 speed. This way it would cruise a lot better and give better gas mileag as well.
I think the closest 5 speed transmission to the G40 in terms of ratios is the G52F but this does not seem to be a straight fit.
If anyone has done a similar swap please let me know.Any info in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Arjun75. The only thing I can suggest is to find out what gearbox the Hilux of the same year with the same 3L engine are using.
We dont get too many LJ79 through here
Why is a G52f not a straight forward swap?
Hi roscofj73....the g52f i checked came from a 94 hilux with the 3L engine.Apparently there was a difference in the housing dimensions that it did not fit straight on ie prop length etc.

You may have to change the prop length because 5sp are often longer. They are usually 4 sp with an extra gear added hence the tags G40 and G50.
Crushers on this forum ,also known as Luxury Imports was wrecking a LJ78 which has the 2LT engine. Maybe you could get the prop shafts as well
No,these are not available in oz that year ,even as a grey import. We had the SWB LJ70 from 84- 91?
