(My impressions) I have been 'making do' with the stock gears and my 37's since last December. Honestly around town and for most of highway traveling it was fine. Once there is any serious grade on the highway you were dead meat. Want to pack in a bunch of gear and go camping? You better give yourself some extra time to get there... I felt like I was really punishing my transmission. Now off road I also had some trouble with the stock gears and the 37's. There were one or two spots on John Bull where there was a large mostly perpendicular obstacle on a steep incline that I could not get over without bumping it. I had it completely floored and I was locked with no tire spin.
. In addition, I felt the truck would surge after initially climbing a large obstacle. It took so much throttle that once it crested it would seem to leap ahead pretty much mandating two foot driving in many scenarios.
So I took the truck over to Top Line performance after some people on the site told me about them and I could not be happier. Mario is the owner of the shop and an FJ80 enthusiast/owner. He did the gear install and the whole experience was excellent. Can't recommend these guys enough. No BS, just the facts. I also found their prices to be quite competitive.
So I went to Big Bear and I can tell you the difference on the trail is like night and day. The truck has so much usable power and there was much more control via throttle modulation. On the road the difference is just as pronounced. The truck acts like I added 80 HP to it. The tranny shifts gears lightening fast. When climbing some steep grades it really has no trouble keeping up and even surpassing all the speed limits. Way way better. I was worried about rpms and highway driving but I am quite content traveling a gps verified 74MPH and turning 2800-2900 rpms.
Overall, I highly recommend the 5.29's with 37's and Top Line Performance for any work you may need.
