I haven't been here in a while so I'm sure I've missed out. The rear window on my '87 4Runner is slow moving. I've thought that putting a standard truck topper door on it might be a good solution. Someone even suggested using just a sealed piece of 1/4" plexy cut to shape, hinged and pistoned. Has anyone come up with a good solution to the pokey rear electric window? Better motor? Perfect door?

why not just fix the electric window? its much more versatile than a piece of plexi glass or some kind of door.

i dont think there is anythng "pokey" with the rear window. just needs a little service. i mean its only 20 + years old.

It's always been really slow. I've always assumed that greasing it won't be enough to make it fast. Is yours fast? I suppose I'll try that, though, as the cheap and easy solution.

i agree. greasing it would be just a band aid fix. its not the real problem.
it needs to be taken apart and rebuilt. its just a motor and a scissor like linkage in there.

maybe a bushing on one of the pivot points is worn down and causing the linkage to flex and bind up.

maybe the motor is bad.

maybe the linkage itself is bent.

just take it apart and see whats going on in there.

Could be the 20+ year old wiring too. i greased mine a while back and it helped a lot.

No disrespect intended, but electric windows and a lot of dust, like you'd get on the rear of an SUV, just don't mix. A **** poor design in my book. I don't know how difficult it would be to:
.......... I've thought that putting a standard truck topper door on it might be a good solution........

But, that's the best long term fix, IMHO. Those window channels that the window slides up and down in gum up really fast and cleaning those out and keeping them clean has got to be the best PM move you could make. But first you have to take it apart, like Bryan89 says, to get a clear picture of what is going on.
