Ok. So before the flames and pitchforks come out let me explain the question;
Recently picked up a 2008 LX with about 130k miles. Based on the known fact that a little old Korean grandmother drove it before me, I’m fairy certain that the 4Lo has never been used before me.
(The first time I engaged the 4Lo is took a solid 30-40 seconds to engage. Now it takes a few seconds after engaging it a few times.)
I was out playing on the beach and decided to try the 4Lo just to make sure it works. Once engaged the truck drives as expected but there’s a good amount of “whine”. I was compare it to straight cut gear noise. It’s very audible. On my GX, and 4Runner, 4Lo was no louder than 4High.
I do have the transfer case/gear oils sitting at home ready to change but wanted to know how everyone else’s 4Lo sounds... I’m curious if it’s just lack of use and it will go away or if is damage something.
Advice?
