Does anyone know if there was a width variation in the years of fj40s? My original tub was a 64 and I now have a 1978 and my tailgate is narrower then the opening of the new tub. The tub was in really bad shape so I'm doing rust repair.

The 78 in the US had ambulance doors that fit flush with the tub. Because of this the tailgate is not wide enough to fit on the outside of the tub which was stock for the tailgates from the soft top models. I've done some testing and posted pictures in a thread a few years ago. The tailgate should fit flush with the opening not outside. If that is how your fits then it is correct. That notch for the doors to fit flush is the amount the opening increased to have ambulance doors to fit flush.

My main concern is my tailgate is about an inch too narrow, which I'm hoping my factory hard top will still fit also, as it is from my original tub. But ambulance doors make since, I can always widen my tailgate to fit correctly
