Hey everybody, currently rebuilding a chevy 4.3 with vortec heads to drop in my '85 pickup, 22re is getting a little lotta tired haha. What i want to know is if anyone has done any work to the motor when doing this swap? I'm looking for mild performance cam, aftermarket TBI set-up, intake manifold etc. Anyone with some experience? because i'm having a hard time finding much
If you get bored check out "1980 beater build" here on this forum. I am not saying mine is built but you might find a few items I tackled and or beat my head against a wall on. Are you mating it to the yota tranny? If so trust me when I say get your wallet ready. Also are you going TBI or carb or ?? As for upgrades I only heavily match gasket ported the head and performer intake and carbed mine. I am happy so far with the power but I still ask myself if it was worth it.
I'll def look into your build, I'm going to match it up to the toy tranny and i'm lookin for a tbi set up. waiting for edelbrock to get back to me on wether their self tuning systems will adapt to a V6 instead of a small block but I've also heard of a FAST self tuning system, curious about the quality. Have you run into problems off-camber on the trails or up/down slopes with you carb?
Mine is a TBI. Attached to an EFI W56. Reasonable throttle has allowed me to run this for over ten years. There is no need for a cam or Hi-Po extras/upgrades. You will be getting twice the horsepower and twice the torque of your stocker.
Seeing as the motor needed a rebuild anyways i figured i may as well have some fun with it, and your right it is a ton of work but if i wasn't building the truck this way i'd be fixing something else on it. At least now when i'm done i'll have a new more powerfull motor with new electrical (beyond tired of my scabby 22re harness) that i know will start everyday. The performance mods are something i want to do not something i think is a necessitie, appreciate the input. Has anyone heard of FAST (Fuel Air Spark Technology)? i'm looking at teaming their EZ-EFI package to an edelbrock intake manifold (pn:2114) and a comp cam grind #260AHR.
Well I will give you one thing... despite two guys with 4.3s saying they wont do that again I am really looking forward to your build. Keep us posted on what you do and how it goes. I totally agree with the concept of "I understand it doesnt have to be done but I can so why not" that is what makes it fun. As for my carb I just installed it two nights ago or maybe three..... BUT we ran the same carb only larger on a 350 this year and won Four Wheelers 2011 Top Truck Challenge. The carb was VERY impressive.... For a carb. It never once sputtered and I can promise when the video comes out we had it on a camber
One more thing I think 98 and newer crank shafts have a large OD on the crank shaft pilot bearing. Advanced adapters sells the bushing to adapt back down for 40 bucks which you will need to if you purchase an advanced adapters bell housing kit. Also on the heads the water ports for like a temp sensor or whatever have a very wierd thread that is a >>>> to find.
EDIT: OK I lied on the one more thing part. The manifolds are a >>> as well and I list the year you need to look for on the driver side to find a factory header that will clear the frame assuming you cut the flange off.
Yes i'm excited to see the video and hear how your truck does with the carb, and i've been browsing through your build 4X4 as well as the FAQ's in my spare time it seems there are lots of fun little snags along the way in this sort of build. Thanks for all the tips, i'll do what i can to keep everyone updated.
