Hello everyone as u can all see I'm new to forums in general hopefully I can become a contributing member of this community and get to know some new people as well. Anyways back to the reason for this thread I have a 1985 Toyota four runner with 5.29 gears a 4:1 transfercase lonfields detroit locker in front and welded in rear pushing thirty seven inch super swampers full Exo full disc brakes driveline brake etc anyways u get a general idea but this winter I'm looking to ditch the carberated 22 r and get a fuel injected v-6 the question is do I go 4.3 or 3.4 and one problem im struggling with is can the five speed I have hold up sort of on a budget because also want to do a twin stick any advice would be appreciated

I would go with the 5VZFE (supercharged 3.4). A bit lighter, its toyota, great power and an easier swap. Not saying its EASY by any means though. Or even a 1UZFE (lexus 4.0 V8). Very light in terms of a V8. Whatever you do, please.. Just keep it toyota.

The 3.4 isn't going to work with the transmission you currently have. You will need to get an R150/R151 out of either a Turbo mini or a V6 rig, + the adapter to the t-case + 23 spline input.

For the 4.3 You will need to get an adapter + all of the anciliaries (starter, clutch, flywheel, pressure plate). And you will have a bit much torque to throw at your G or W transmission, so you'd need to be careful with the happy pedal when wheeling.

Personally, if I were going with a 4.3, I'd also to an auto at the same time.
With the Toyota 3.4 I'd do the R150/151 5 speed.

And aside from tranny/ t/case adaptations, you will have to modify your motor mounts for either engine, ie. the stock mounts are not in the right location on the frame. Not to mention the mounts themselves are diffrent.

Yeah the motor mounts don't worry me too bad built my own solid ones for the 22 r and also every bracket that holds front and rear end I fabricate at work so not a real issue just comparing costs

I just got a suggestion on the 2.7 instead it would solve the carb and trany that I have would bolt up with a Taco bell housing and at 160 hp and 170 torque it would be enough to satisfie my appetite for a while add a twin stick and sounds like I'd be in business what does everyone else think

The 3RZ is a great motor. Awsome power for a 4 banger. And you could still use the W or G tranny. Just need a diffrent bellhousing. The 3RZs use the W-59 tranny for manual.

If your going to go through the effort of swapping an engine, swap in a V8. I'd recommend an LS just because they are so easy to put in.

No, the w56 won't hold up. It will break behind anything over 120hp. Your good with a 22re, but its marginal with a 5mg or 3rz.

If I were do to it over again, I'd do a 4.8/nv3550 with some kind of doubler setup (such as a 241/dana300 combo). I could have had it in my truck for the cost of my current 22re/w56/dual case setup, and it would have gotten better mpg with a ton more power.

EDIT: I just re-read your post. If you have an 85 4runner, it should be EFI. What happened to the fuel injection?

Not all 85's were EFI. Just most previlent due to the fact it was the first year it was available.

True in trucks. 4wd trucks were aval as a carb until 87 in 4wd, and 92 in 2wd.

Not true in 4runners. All 85+ 4runners were fuel injected.

Yes I believe I'm going to go with the 1uz motor thanks for all the help and suggestions hopefully I'll have a thread of the build. Its a couple months away still just wanted to put all my ducks in a row before I pull the trigger.

Good choice on going with the 1UZFE  you should not desire much more than that.

Ps. You might want to swap in a set of V6 diffs, ur 4cly models wont stand a chance against such a beast of a motor. Oh, and make sure you do a writeup on the swap for us!
