Doing Sumo 4:1 gear in my 97 HZJ73. Couple of questions for you guys who have done this more than I have. I ran into a couple of challenges and figured I’d see if I can get some confirmations before we try and finish it out on Monday.
The high speed gear bottoms out on the splines as they transition. The OE gear needed to be pulled off, splines are tight. The new gear is more snug than the OE gear and hits the splines at the transition (see video). Our plan is to put the gear in the oven at about 250* and then line it up and slam it on with a new seal. Is this a good plan?
Also was reading and is there an issue reassembling this with the factory drive selector shaft? It looks identical to manual shift, just saw a post where @orangefj45 mentioned having to swap it out, but the shaft in this has the notching that looks just like a manual shift shaft and this never came up when looked into compatibility. From everything I researched this should go right on but now that we’re this far into it I figured I’d check.
And finally… womp womp put a couple of holes in the case. I honestly don’t know if they would have gone on without it, not a big deal, one of my guys will TIG it in the morning but as careful as I was I still managed to do it despite my determination that I was better than everyone else and if I was careful it wouldn’t happen to me. I am no better!
Thanks for any advice!
