The 1HZ is definitely a good choice, it's indirect injection so a wee bit quieter, the BEBs are less prone to pitting as the 1HD-T and that was the engine of choice in the outback. But having a turbo... Hmmmm!!!! Sorry, I won't go back to normally aspirated, and like I said before, your fuel economy will be directly related to how disciplined you are with your right foot!!!

So could it be said that turbo's for diesel and superchargers for gas engines actually increase fuel efficiency at lower RPM's? If this is the case I am going to be kicking myself even more for not buying an SC before they were discontinued because I have been known to have a grandpa foot on the gas pedal.

That is half true. Turbos on diesels have been known to increase mpg, especially one that spools fast, like a HY35 that replaces a H1C on a 4BT.

SC lower mpg.

Have you considered another widely available Japanese diesel?
I'd recommend one out of an Isuzu N truck or Mitsubishi Canter/FE.
They're in the 5L range, turbo and until recently mechanical, inline injector pump.
Our fleet has an FE with 367k miles on it. And it's got lots of life left in it.
