I have been haveing a smoking problem with my 81 BJ42, It would smoke at startup for quite a while and always when underway and pulling a hill, it was a gray to black smoke, I made sure the air/ fuel filters were new, was told that the injectors were new. It did improve by slightly retarding the timing.

so I decided to look at the injectors and chnage nozzels. I am assuming that all the internals should be installed the same. but someone must have thought differently.

Time to look in the FSM and see how the plunger should go, By looking at it the long indented end should be towards the nozzel

the one on the left I do not know how it was but two look like they are in backwards.

Nozzle should be flush with the injector tip.

Been long time since I rebuilt a set, but I think the short side is down.

Ps, Should be pretty strait forward as the tip has a little nipple sticking out on the injections side.

Rebuilding injectors is one thing that I leave for those more qualified than I. Deisel fuel system work is finiky and requires special equipment and instruments to ensure it is done right with the correct presures etc. not to mention that it needs almost surgical cleanliness.
I'd take it all to a certified diesel shop and let them do it.

Agreed, Luckly my son is a certified Cat machanic experienced in injector rebuilding, Finail assembly will be for him to do.

.

Nozzle tips for sure can get contaminated by fingertips soo easy. So if anyone gets new nozzles resist the urge to feel the tips. Finger oils will change the pattern pretty big. On aircraft(PT-6) engines we are told to never touch them or the changed nozzle path could damage the engine. I have cleaned and flow tested nozzles and can see that, the pattern when not quite right can drip or spray cockeyed.

I was not really satified until today with this work, I had jsut driven it a couple of times and it lacked power and still smoked. I had forgotten that I had retarded the the timing, set it back to the marks and it runs like a champ.
