I am working on getting this 3B engine running that has been sitting for years. When I removed the cylinder head I found some rust in cylinder 3. The cylinder head had some rust that left some pitting. It doesn’t look like there is any at the gasket. Is this a problem or can I clean it up and move forward?

It's not ideal, I would at least get it skimmed. Some of that pitting looks pretty deep so might be worth getting the head pressure tested. Was the engine sat lying with water inside? If not, it's a sign that coolant was runnign through the engine, which usually means a cracked head. That said, I see no signs of the usual cracking in your picture. If it passes a pressure test and gets a good skim I would guess it will be fine on something as low powered as a 3B. But it's probably more prone to cracking with those deep pits.

Thanks, I’m pretty sure water got into the cylinder while it was sitting. I don’t think it is cracked. If I get it skimmed, it won’t catch any of the pitting since the pitting is inside the combustion chamber. I will get a pressure check just to make sure.

If the heads not cracked, id just run with it.

On a 3B you have to take what you can get.

The pitting is on the surface of the head, which is flat. This is not a petrol engine. Skimming the head will absolutely touch the pitted area.

I can't see too well in the photo but the valve seats probably want grinding too.
