My Bj60 has developed a small coolant leak that has increased over the last week, leaving small puddles of coolant after it has been sitting for a while.

I got under the vehicle to take try to trace the source. It looks like it might be coming from the water pump but from the picture most of the coolant is pooling on top of the pump so I am thinking it might be coming from the water outlet assembly above the water pump.

Am I looking in the correct area or am I missing another source?

Thanks for the help, Justin

Check the weep hole on the water pump. If the water pump bearing is going, that is where you will find a leak. If it is your water pump; you should replace it soon as a catastrophic failure is right around the corner.

Water pump and maybe thermostat housing or the bypass hose but considering the condition I would change them both along with hoses to have another 30 years of use

The dye worked great, I tracked the leak down to the bypass hose coming from the water outlet assembly into the water pump. It really leaks when I plug in the block heater not so much when it is running.

I should probably get a new water pump just in case, how much does a 3B water pump go for?

Thanks again for the help,
Justin

That's good news that it was just the hose.

I wouldn't replace the pump if I were you. In my experience, water pumps dont grenade or fail without giving warning signs first. Usually they will weap, or the bearing will start to fail resulting in a wobbely fan or noisy belts. If you were planning a trip to Death Valley it might be a different story but putting around town I'd leave it alone. Keep an eye on stuff and you'll be fine. Just trying to save you a bit of $$

I would have to dis agree with you cam. To replace this hose you can try and do it with pump on but you can safe yourself the hard ache by pulling the pump. So unless you know you have changed the pump I would change it also the coolant will be empty. Also I recommend doing the thermo, yes this will cost you money. try radd for pump. All this will save you in the long run. In the end you will do what you want, I am just advising. For silicone I sugest using right stuff.

I had the same thing happen on my wagon a few years ago, driving back from northern alberta. Not a good thing considering most of that time was in the middle of nowhere, up/down isolated rig roads. I agree with Jay, replace it and be done with it, do the hoses while you're at it and peace of mind. If you're not in a rush i have a bunch of coolant hose left over from the roll that i bought, that you can have, and i can also get you some HST free parts if you need me to.
Cheers!

I agree with you both. Although the "right" way and the "inexpensive way" are almost always different ways.

The poor guy just dropped a new (used) motor in, had a baby and bought a house. Just trying to stretch things a little for old Justin.... that's all.

Thanks guys I really appreciate the advice.

Cam knows my situation better then most he was just looking out for me, cheers Cam

Wombat I ‘ll send you a PM.

The rain died down the sun came out and the new water pump went in, as well as a new t-stat and bypass hose.

We left the fan shroud in and worked around it, which was a bit of pain but it worked out well.

I want to give a big thanks to Vern for his help today, without his help the job would not have gone so smoothly.:beer:

A pic of Vern showing off the new water pump prior to the install:

where did you get the new thermo from.... lordco kept giving me the wrong one and it didnt fit... i had to get one from toyota and a new gasket...
just curious... how much was the new pump?

glad it all worked out
adam

Hey Adam,
All the parts and gaskets are OEM Toyota from the dealership.

If you go on the diesel section of mud and search t/stat you will find pages of guys not finding the right stat for a 3b from aftermarket.
Its not worth the hassle going back and forth,go to the dealer, pay a little more and get the right one the first time. IMHO
