I have 285 75 R 16's on FJ80 Rims. The tires are Cooper STT Discovers. I had the tires on a truck and when I sold it I saved them for the cruiser. They are close to 33's and fairly wide.
I drove them for 1 day and they rubbed quite a bit with any tight turns (parking lots, pulling into driveway, etc). This was on a bone stock FJ60. The next day my AAL's came (the long ones) and we installed them.
I'm not sure where all the talk of awful ride quality comes from. My springs we're saggy and this seemed to balance them out and make the ride a little tighter in the turns (less body roll). I have yet to go off road, but cruising around town over speed bumps the ride feels fine. Not the "stiff" ride that everyone on here says I would get. And at $150 for the AAL's I can run my larger tires until I have $1500+ for the OME. I have taken some tight turns into hills and have yet to rub.
