Hey guys, it has been a long time since I have posted. My daughter who is getting ready to graduate college has an 02 LC with right at 300k miles. Over the last year it seems that the ole girl is starting to eat approx a quart of oil every 3-4K miles. We have owned it for 8 years and I change the oil every 5-6k with Pennzoil Paltimum and OE filters.

Maybe it’s just getting to that stage in life where the engine eats a little bit of oil. My daughter is not good at checking her oil and she will be a teacher living several hours from us so if possible I’d like to see if there things I could look at to fix this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Also, it does not smoke on startup even if siting for several days.

If it’s not leaking and simply consuming it I’d give Valvoline Restore and Protect a shot - I know a lot of people on Bob is the oil guy swear by it.

My '99 is at 363,000 and still doesn't use any between changes, but then I change it at around 3500 miles and use Pennzoil 5W-30 synthetic. One quart at 3-4 thousand miles isn't excessive or unusual at your high mileage.

If you get blue smoke on initial startup then valve stem seals are bad and no oil will save it. If the issue is rings, yes, try Valvoline Restore and protect to loosen up the stuck piston rings. Mine is at 254K miles and does not burn oil. I do an oil change every 2500 miles with an OEM filter

How much does an engine rebuild cost these days? I'm at 260k miles and have a lot of mods. If it comes down to it, I would rather rebuild the motor than buy another and switch all the mods onto it. The body and paint are really good on mine still, too

The only issue you will come across in these Toyota made engines are oil burning. If you rebuild it no shop in the country or in the world will build like it did by toyota. The best is to do the Valvoline Restore and protect o remove any stuck piston rings. You may have to do 4-5 of those oil changes to see a noticeable difference in the oil burning. You can also install a catch can to trap excessive oil getting pumped into the throttle body. Thicker oil should help to lower the oil consumption. I would not think to rebuild the engine unless I am at about 500K miles on a Landcruiser toyota engine.
