My 2H has been running hotter than usual on long trips, esp. bad on hot days when I use the a/c, going up to 1/2 on the gauge when it used to stay at 1/4. After cleaning and checking the rad fins, topping up coolant and making sure there's no air in the system, verifying the pump has good flow, and removing the t-stat to be sure, nothing seemed to make a difference. Finally figured out the fan clutch is pooched, diagnosed by checking it when the engine was very hot from a long drive and the fan spun free and easy. It should have been stiff from the clutch being engaged.
My temporary solution? Get a small angle bracket from the hardware store, drill one hole bigger, remove one nut from the fan mount and fasten the bracket on. Now when I go on trips over 1 hour in hot weather, I can bend the bracket into the fan clutch and it "locks" the fan in constant motion. Of course, it whines like an airplane on the Hwy. An I was surprise how much extra power it sucks from the engine. But the engine is now back to normal operating temp. I bend the bracket out of the way most of the time cause my trips are usually 30 min or less. Now to get my fan clutch replaced/rebuilt....
