i am trying to remove my injection pump and can not get the automatic timer off. Manual says to use SST 09267-76020 and have tried to locate one but no one has one including Toyota ( says it is discontinued). tried local fuel injection shops and they have nothing to fit. it is a funky thread size. i have measure thread pitch and it is 1.5. 20MM X 1.5 is too small and 22MM X 1.5 is too big. i have never heard of 21MM X1.5. also tried tapping end of injection pump shaft to see if i could dislodge the timer but had no success. it is on a tapered shaft with a keyway. if anyone can help with this issue i would be indebted. thanks in advance for any help. Why do you need to take the timer off? I left it on when I took mine to get rebuilt.

You can pull the pump with the gear attached, just make sure you make a note of the gear index position in relation to the other gears.
All the gears should be marked, and i guess you've seen that in the fsm. 1on1, 2on2 and so on.
I just pulled mine back with the timer on, but first stamped a mark on the retainer around the automatic timer to be able to bolt it back in the same rotated position.

I realize this is an old thread have a question.
I don't have the factory manual but i have the max ellery. If I'm reading right you don't have to pull the timing cover off the front of the engine to remove the pump? You just unbolt it and slide it out and the gear will come with it?

Yes, that is correct, fetch the big o ring as you slide it back.
Remember to mark the axial setting on the flange against the engine, so you get it right back on the timing setting.
But I have no idea how you could get the gear on the pump back in the right sync with the others, has to be lined up, as mentioned above.

Yeah I was wondering how that would be done when you went to install it. I thought maybe someone on here had figured out a clever way. I'm all ears if someone has ideas.
well after looking at your pics...if you didn't spin the pump at all on the way out couldn't you just mark the back of the retainer plate and a tooth on the gear and line them back up when before installing?
Yes, that is an option, but there is no way of verifying that you hit correct on the way in, and I had to wiggle the pump a bit to get it out.

As far as I can see you have no choice but to remove the timing cover.
I don't think you can ever be sure of having the correct cog-alignment with that cover left in place (and hiding your view of the cogs).
Cogs tend to move of their own accord due to things such as "valve spring pressure".
thats what i figured...just trying to save myself some labor if there was a way.

well after pulling off the pump...(what fun those two inside nuts are). I got to thinking about it...on the top of the timing plate there is a hex cap bolt you can remove and see one tooth of the gear. You could mark this tooth with a grease pencil and I think you could then reinstall and make sure you saw your mark.
