Got the cruiser inside last weekend and began the tear down. Discover that the crank pulley/harmonic balancer is the issue (or at least one issue). It looks like the pulley is separating from the balancer (and making one hell of a bad noise in the process) Anyone seen this before? I plan on dropping the front main in the next few days and inspecting it. With any luck the balancer is the only issue and she can go back on the road for a while...

PS What size is the crank bolt? I need to add that socket to the collection.

Replace that HB immediately -- it's getting ready to un-assemble itself. When it does lots of bad (expensive) things will happen. Still avail from Mr. T, but spendy. There are some aftermarket Chinese ones that I wouldn't use. Some Aus made that are good, but close to discount-dealer price (BENO). Can always go used. Orangefj45 (mud user name) prolly has some.

Oreilly has the Chinese ones, if you don't care.

@rmblaire call Georg in Stockton to see if he has one at the yard or go scavenge the one off the 60 in the Sparks Pick N Pull (if it is still there).

Thanks guys!

Yes, replace immediately. If those rivets let go then the pulley portion will have a field day with your fan and radiator.......

I've seen this a couple of times but it's not common.

Fwiw, my number is not what Gregnash posted.

Crank Nut= 46mm.

I suggest researching how to get that nut off before taking the starter off (and battery, etc).
One method to remove it is via a short starter burst with a long breaker bar pressed against the frame. Might be other methods

I've used this method as well on my 2F as well as my 1FZ-FE (bolt). One thing to add, I ratchet strapped the breaker bar to the frame for some safety! ;)

Thank you for all the info. I have a cruiser friend here that thinks he might have a used one that will work. I will get mine pulled off and check with him. If not, ill give George a call. Is the crank bolt tough to break?? I figured buy the socket and put the impact on kill...

Yep, this and also make sure that the breaker bar is perfectly parallel with the face of the pulley (harmonic balance)...this will make sure that there are no off axis forces trying to twist the socket away...

If I remember correctly the crank bolt is put on at something like 250# of torque.

I read somewhere it was #160 - but it is big, need a better source than I
