I'm about to pull the trigger on a new set of Toyo AT2 extreme tires, but am still on the fence about the size. I am 90% set on 295/75R16 but am somewhat considering the 315/75R16 only because I am geared lower (4.88) and want to keep the RPMs down. I by no means need the 315s based on the wheeling I plan to do, but it does help I suppose when I attempt that extra credit obstacle or try that tougher trail.

My question is does anyone have any experience with 295s and 4.88 gears?

Are the highway RPMs excessive? I am planning some longer road trips over the next few years. I don't mind driving a little slower but want to be able to keep up with traffic (65 is usually where I live). I know a couple guys here have 5.29 with 285s, but that's too low IMO.

With the 315s I have no chance in fitting in my garage with anything on the roof. I think with the 295s I can fit a low profile rack (eventual goal).

The 315s are a bit more $ and an additional 8lbs each. And the hit on mileage and extra wear on axles and brakes.

Opinions?

If there is ever a possibility of pulling a trailer in your future (AT or Teardrop), then I would stick with the 295s. Just being able to park it in the garage would seal the deal for me on the 295s.

What he said x2.

I have been very happy with 4:88's, 285's and pulling a loaded Chaser. I kept with 285's as that is a common 80 series size and if I flatted out and ate up my spare there would be good odds of bumming a spare off a buddy. 315's should be sorta easy but 295's may be an issue. (Not that you couldn't prob drive out with slightly mismatched sizes). Just my 2 cents

That has actually happened to me. Blew out both tires on the passenger side on a trail and had to call a buddy to drive out and borrow his spare. Luckily I was fairly close to home and had cell service.

If I wasn't geared lower, and the the tires I want were available in 285s I would probably get those.

I'm rolling 315's and can with in my garage. And that's with a platform rack on top. However, I agree about towing issue. If you pull up in the mountains a lot, you will consider new gears or SC with the 315's. I don't bring my trailer often, but when I do, I always revisit the SC option.

I pulled the trigger on the 295s and will be getting them installed this weekend. :bounce:

My 315s are up for sale if anyone is interested.
